On a Tuesday afternoon, we sat at Wan Chun Ting as platters of mooncakes were presented in front of us, one after another and almost never ending. Wan Chun Ting is Sofitel Kuala Lumpur Damansara‘s Chinese restaurant serving Cantonese and Imperial cuisine. Come celebrations like the Lunar New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival, the restaurant is in full swing with seasonal offerings.
Also known as Mooncake Festival, the Mid-Autumn celebrations are determined by the lunar calendar and fall toward the end of summer when the moon is full and most luminous. It’s become an honoured tradition we look forward to when friends and family gift and share mooncakes, a symbol of reunion, harmony and completeness. Their shapes resemble a full moon and gives chefs full reign to flex their creativity with intricate patterns and symbols etched into its snow or baked skin.
This year is even more extravagant than the last as Chef Leong Weng Heng and his team have crafted an extensive menu of delicious mooncakes. The best of the best is the Dragon Fruit with Blueberry Truffle of the snow skin range, a flavour so unique that we’ve yet to try anything like it. Refreshing and light, fresh dragon fruit cubes and purees give the mooncake texture a very delicate touch, enhanced with contrasting sweetness from a burst of blueberry truffle.
The array of snow skin mooncakes also include the creamy Limited Edition Musang King wrapped in a pillow-light snow skin, Black Charcoal with a generous filling of cheese, the Coffee Paste with rich Butter Cream, and Pumpkin with a mild touch of Chocolate Truffle. Each comes at MYR38 and MYR58 for the Limited Edition Musang King.
Keeping it classic this year is the selection of handcrafted all-time favourite baked mooncakes such as Classic Red Bean Paste, Pure White Lotus, White Lotus with Double Egg Yolk, Assorted Mixed Fruits and Nuts and Pandan Single Yolk. The baked mooncakes are priced at MYR36 or MYR38 each.
And finally, further allowing these mooncakes to shine bright the moon is its specially designed leather box that can be converted into a wine box. In a bold shade of orange, it’s a standout piece of decor for any season.
Sofitel Kuala Lumpur Damansara’s mooncakes are available for sale from now until 15 September 2019. The mooncakes are also available in retail booth in 1Utama Shopping Centre from 29 August to 13 September 2019 from 10 am to 10 pm.
