On a muggy Thursday afternoon in November, a group of thirsty tipplers converged at the established gin specialist bar Pahit in Sekeping Sin Chew Kee to indulge in a memorable evening of mixing and mingling with Charmaine Thio. The newly appointed Regional Brand Ambassador for Hendrick’s Gin had been specially flown down from Singapore to host the launch of the bar’s new Botanical Odyssey Menu inspired by Hendrick’s famous bottled “water of life”. Officially launched in 1999, this premium gin produced by William Grant and Sons Ltd in Scotland has certainly made a name for itself in the modern gin market with its unique flavour profile that infuses no less than eleven traditional botanicals with unexpected ingredients such as refreshing cucumber and the remarkable Bulgarian rose.
Beyond experimenting with new flavours, Hendrick’s is also equally passionate about collaborating with budding talents from the local cocktail community and the decision to appoint Thio, who was previously the Head Bartender of the award-winning 28 HongKong Street bar in Singapore, was a natural fit. When asked about her thoughts on the new role, Thio said: “I have always been a gin lover, and I am fortunate to be working with Hendrick’s – a brand with a quality liquid, and such a distinctive and exciting brand world. I look forward to working with other bartenders across the region, inducting them into the marvellously unusual world of Hendrick’s and to inspire them to think about its unique flavour profile and how it can be incorporated in different serves beyond the classic Hendrick’s & Tonic.”
As the day wore on, Thio was quick to demonstrate the art of transforming a bottle of gin into a beautiful blended cocktail while carefully explaining the finer points behind every recipe. From fruity mixes like sours and swizzlers, to refreshing builders and the classic martini, it became steadily evident for the guests in attendance that no classic cocktail could possibly be complete without ensuring that one always has a Victorian-looking bottle of Hendrick’s within arms reach. If you’re eager to make a lasting impression during your next fabulous cocktail party, have a go at this simple-but-sublime Hendrick’s Gin-approved cocktail recipe that was once described by American author E. B. White as “the elixir of quietude”.
