A rouge powder from a legendary fashion house. New shades from (and worn by) Rihanna herself. An iconic runway red lippie, with a shade melded from two created by Christian Dior. 1. Dior Rouge Ultra Rouge
It’s a bold claim, but the Dior Rouge Ultra Rouge wants to deliver everything women want in a lipstick. It stains lips like ink with its pigmented, semi-matte formula while keeping lips lightly hydrated. It promises twelve-hour wear, but lasted a little over half a day for us. Shade 999 (Ultra Dior) is the range’s iconic shade and combines Mr Dior’s creation of two perfect red lipsticks for the runway almost fifty years ago.
2. Yves Saint Laurent Beauté Rouge Pur Couture The Slim
The words ‘square lipstick’ might baffle some, but YSL pulls off the geometric shape with aplomb. The Yves Saint Laurent Beauté Rouge Pur Couture The Slim boasts sharp, geometric lines that translate into precise application — yes, you’re forgiven for skipping the lipliner. Despite the ultra-matte and saturated colour, it’s remarkably creamy and stays on for hours with zero transfer, bleeding or cracking. Slim and compact, these fit perfectly into the tiniest of clutch bags for nights out.
3. Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Pant
The award for this year’s most hyped-up lipstick release goes to Fenty Beauty and its three new drops for its Stunna Lip Paint. First came the chocolate-brown Unveil, which was worn by RiRi herself at her Savage X Fenty show at New York Fashion Week. Then came Uncuffed: A rosy mauve-shade, and finally, Unbutton: A peachy nude. One stroke of the lipstick sees impressive colour payoff and a full application sees no feathering, staying smooth and slick all day.
4. Chanel Rouge Allure Liquid Powder
The finish on these powdery matte and hides any cracks or lines thanks to its blurring effect. A foam applicator eases the application process; simply glide it on to achieve a creamy colour. The secret to its velvety texture is the softening oils which gives lips a second-skin texture that melts when applied. Ultra-thin and highly concentrated pigments give the liquid powder an intense shade one won’t expect from its soft, fine texture.
5. Burberry Lip Velvet Crush
Don’t look this way if you’re looking for a powerfully pigmented lipstick. The Burberry Lip Velvet Crush is not saturated with colour, and is delightfully sheer for those who love the look of just bitten lips. On first application, the lipstick delivers a soft, powdery matte finish, and applies beautifully with the cushion applicator. Dab it on for a light stained effect or dial up the formula for more coverage. Expect blurred edges instead of sharp, precise lines.
