As new scents continue to make their ways into the beauty counters, there’s no better time than now to update your fragrance wardrobe. While our tropical climes are made for airy, crisp, and refreshing perfumes, don’t just reach for summery, citrus notes. In the heat of our climate, spicier scents still can work — the right blend fades beautifully to leave a comforting yet sheer warmth on skin and a jolt to the senses as the day passes. Ahead, we list a spate of new scents from all fragrance families for both him and her.
Picture life in Cote d’Azur in the 1920s — hardly a feat with a spritz of the Chanel Riveria. Perfumer Olivier Polge dreamt up a sun-soaked Eden along the Mediterranean coast bordering Italy and Monte Carlo, where Gabrielle Chanel herself sojourned in the 1920, eventually opening a boutique in Cannes and building her “La Pausa” villa on the heights of Roquebrune.
As an ode to this dreamy destination, the Riviera is floral and luminous, and is akin to Mediterranean flowers bathed in fresh citrus. Jasmine meets neroli from orange blossoms from the South of France, while benzoin balm and sandalwood anchors the base.
Available in limited edition until 31 May 2020 at Chanel stores and on chanel.com
Like a love song to the Mediterranean, A Girl in Capri is an ode to the beautiful island of Capri, with its exuberant bougainvilleas, and foliage, soaring cliffs and bountiful produce. An elegant white flower sits at its heart, with bergamot, lemon and peppercorn tempering and lifting the scent.
Available at major departmental stores.
This year’s Essences Insensées takes inspiration from the Tiare Flower from Tahiti. Green, lively, and unabashedly fresh, the flower is highlighted in every aspect. Frangipani blossom highlights its floral nuances, vanilla absolute leaves a lingering trace, while pink peppercorn gives the scent a hint of spiciness. The sun-shaped bottle makes this a collector’s item as it’s straight from the archives of Waltersperger, one of the last master glassmakers in France.
Available at Diptyque Takashimaya SC, Escentials Tangs at Tang Plaza, and Robinsons The Heeren
“Sun kissed salty skin” reads the description of the new Replica scent. It certainly smells like fresh summer day by the beach, thanks to an uplifting, blend of bergamot and lemon, heightened with pink pepper, coconut milk, musk and delicate floral notes of ylang-ylang and heliotrope.
Available at all Sephora stores and online.
The dizzying landscapes of Oman beckons with the new Memo Paris scent. Anise seed, cinnamon, and vanilla conjures up images of the golden sands of the Wahabi desert. Lavender softens the leather accord — distinctly spicy with coriander, pimento leaf and patchouli oil.
As with all Memo Paris perfumes, the bottle is as beautiful as the scent, and comes packaged with postcards by French travel photographer Christophe Levet and a book that’s specially painted by watercolour artist Sophie de Bayser and written by Thomas Clerc.
Available at Escentials Tangs Plaza and Paragon Orchard, Escentials online, and Robinsons The Heeren.
The sweetness of the Prada Candy lives on in this new edition, albeit with a more sultry nuance. Bitter and bright orange, and Iris aldehyde cut through patchouli, musk, and tonka bean with a citrus crispness, while cocoa bean wraps the scent in a seductive hue.
Available at major departmental stores.
The iconic Signorina gets an edgy makeover with the Ribelle, a scent that’s equal parts feminine and powerful. Described as “floriental woody”, the scent opens with mandarin and red pear, given a spicy boost with pink pepper. Like the Signorina identity, it bears a distinctly floral heart, with tiaré and orange flowers, and soft ylang-ylang. Deep sandalwood and fresh musk at its base is accented with Italian vanilla gelato and coconut milk.
Available from September 2019 at major departmental stores.
Spice Blend is an ode to nostalgia. Dior perfumer-creator Francois Demachy was inspired by a bottle of ‘Bay-Rum’ he spotted as a young boy in his father’s pharmacy. The aroma goes big on boldness, power-packed with spices like Madagascan Black Pepper, dry and peppery Indonesian nutmeg, pine-scented Russian coriander, Madagascan Clove essence, and Chinese cinnamon.
Available at Maison Christian Dior, ION Orchard #B2-52 Singapore 238801.
The name says it all. The light and warmth of the sun is encapsulated in the line of unisex, sunny fragrances. Three new scents — Osmanthus, Yuzu, and Vaniglia — have been added to the lineup.
Osmanthus, a flower that populates rainforests in Southeast Asia, is a floral scent that’s mixed with sparkling green mandarin and delicate neroli.
Yuzu’s bitterness is balanced with the tart, spicy sweetness of bergamot, with the addition of Sichuan pepper for an explosive scent that binds the gentleness of mimosa, violet, jasmine and lotus with a base of sandalwood and musk.
Amber fuses the freshness of orange, bergamot and Petitgrain, with voluptuous, salty and musky ambergris, with woody Nagarmotha and cedarwood mixed with airy rose and patchouli.
Available at Takashimaya, Robinsons The Heeren, Robinsons Raffles City, escentials Paragon, Escentials Tangs from September 2019
If your scent wardrobe’s due for an update, Jo Malone’s Luscious and Fruity Travel Trio set has got you covered. An exclusive collaboration between Jo Malone and The Shilla Duty Free, the set features three of the brand’s bestsellers.
The Wild Bluebell brings a fresh, floral aroma with notes of lily of the valley, eglantine, and persimmon. Mellow English Pear & Freesia evokes the smell of autumn, thanks to a combination of amber, patchouli, and woods. Blackberry & Bay bring to mind childhood memories of fruit picking with blackberry and bay leaves as its dominant notes with vetiver and cedarwood to lend the scent a sophisticated, lingering base.
Available only at The Shilla Duty Free stores.
Issey Miyake’s new scent is reminiscent of a stroll in the forest. As its name suggests, the scent is woody, with layers of earthy, mossy and leathery notes. It opens with spicy notes of grapefruit, cardamom and elemi essence, which is often described as ‘terpenic’, a pine-like, clean and fresh scent. Where the pine scent comes alive are its middle notes of Virginia cedarwood and sandalwood, creamy Ambrox and sweet apricot. Rounding out the scent is a warm, intense blend of woods, Haitian vetiver, and patchouli with musk.
