October beauty favourites: What’s old is new again

As the year draws to a close, the holiday launches are rapidly coming our way. But before we enter a wonderland of glitter, shine, and pretty packaging, we’re seeing updates to three beauty bestsellers: The catchy-sounding Hope in a Jar cream, the YSL square-tipped lipstick, and a new formula for a beloved gel liner.

YSL Rouge Pur Couture The Slim Sheer Matte

The first edition of these lipsticks were widely celebrated for their super slim, purse-friendly proportions. They were also ultra-matte yet had a comfortable finish. Most of all, their square tip allowed for precise applications — even without lip liner.

The 2019 edition sees a thorough update without changing its much-loved feature. Coloured in silver instead of gold like last year, the square bullets now boast a sheer formula that can be built on for a more vivid pigmentation. It’s even formulated with a “blurring” technology so the fine lines on your lips appear less obvious.

Slow Dance by Byredo

Like a gradual metamorphosis into fall,  Byredo’s Slow Dance represents a meeting of the seasons symbolised through the high school rite of passage.

The scent opens with opopanax, a honeyed and slightly balsamic sweet myrrh scent reminiscent of an invitation to a dance. Its notes are the perfect balance of masculine and feminine, with floral accords and patchouli musk, lightened with vanilla, as the anchoring heart. Rich and intoxicating, the scent reminds one of lightly perfumed warm skin.

Philosophy Renewed Hope in a Jar Water Cream

The iconic Hope in a Jar from Philosophy has had a facelift. Now called the Renewed Hope in a Jar Water Cream, it’s a remarkable improvement from the original formula, giving your skin intense hydration. We know this because we personally compared the levels of our skin moisture after application of both.

The updated formula features a hydra-glow complex with hyaluronic acid enhanced with glycerol and pentylene glycol. Pineapple extract gently exfoliates skin to refine it for better skincare absorption, while Norwegian glacial water keeps the skin’s pH level balanced.

While oil-free, its formula leaves skin looking glassy when applied right. Use the range’s peeling mousse to brighten and gently exfoliate skin. Next, pat on the Philosophy dew concentrate to let skin glow, before hydrating it completely with the water cream.

The Philosophy Renewed Hope In A Jar Water Cream is now available exclusively at Sephora stores islandwide and sephora.sg.

Jo Malone Poppy & Barley

Jo Malone‘s latest scent is a breath — or rather, a burst — of fresh air. Like its name suggests, the fragrance reminds one of blooming poppies in the field. Bringing out its floral accord are the juicy blackcurrants, fig and powdery violet, which are also a reminder of a delightful English harvest during peak season. Bran and barley give a lingering creaminess, quickly followed by musky notes.

Jo Malone’s Poppy & Barley is now available at Jo Malone boutiques in ION Orchard, Takashimaya Shopping Centre, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, and counters in Tangs Orchard and Robinsons Raffles City

Chantecaille Real Skin+ Eye and Face Stick

Stick foundations have had a bad reputation in the past because many of them left users with a cakey face or pasty finish. Chantecaille‘s new launch promises to give you a finish that is just like your real skin texture, only better. While lightweight, it still boasts a creamy, blend-able formula that’s flexible enough to be used in multiple ways — as a foundation, under eye concealer, and spot treatment. It even blurs imperfections, and features raspberry stem cell extract and hibiscus extract for anti-aging benefits.

Chantecaille Real Skin+ launches at Takashimaya counters in October 2019

Marc Jacobs Highliner Liquid Gel

Marc Jacobs has done it again with another winning eyeliner. While the highliner liquid gel may sport a classic design and applicator, the formula is in no way old-fashioned. It takes inspiration from the bestselling gel-liner but packs a precise tip and ultra-pigmented colour. To get maximum mileage out of it, pick a bold shade. We find that the metallic cranberry and yellow gold pop the most when layered above black liner.

After application, make sure it’s completely dry to prevent smudging. Doing so will also ensure that your eyeliner stays put. The liner will not smudge, fade or crack, and is best removed with an oil-based makeup remover and a gentle hand.

The Marc Jacobs Highliner Liquid Gel is now available at beauty counters in Sephora
