5 wearable Spring/Summer 2019 beauty trends

In between the glitter-festooned eyes at Halpen, electric pink shades that adorned the cheeks and lips at Rodarte, and the extra-large pouffy up-dos at Chanel were the actually wearable looks of Spring/Summer 2019. Pared-back beauty took its form from head-to-toe — see five of our favourite beauty trends that took the runways of the season.

Graphic liner

At Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2019 show, Lucia Pica sent models down the runway with eyes blended in dark eyeshadows in a rounded shape, contrasted with a graphic liner drawn straight on the bottom lash line.

At Dior, the focus was solely on the eyes with the graphic liner trend taking on a more subtle look. The cat eye flick is drawn only on the bottom lash line, and drawn upwards to create a wing.

Glowing skin

Glowing skin is all the rage this season, with models sporting dewy, radiant complexions and barely-there makeup. At Valentino, Pat McGrath went to two extremes: Models wore crystal-studded pigment on the eyes or nothing on their faces but a swirl of rose blush and a slick of balm. At Victoria Beckham, the designer matched the everyday looks of her collection with seemingly bare faces.

The time to be bold is now. Smokey eyes in chalky candy shades of orange and yellow debuted at Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2019 show.

Or, work your way up to the bolder, richer shades ala models at Rodarte. Blended softly with a brush, vibrant eye colours were inspired by Picasso portraits, and matched with statement lips.

Slicked back hair

At Balmain, hairstylist Sam McKnight was inspired by photographer Helmut Newton. He described the “sculpted wet masculine” hair as “sexily androgynous, very Parisienne”.

To style, apply gel to the roots beginning at the nape of the neck and work up the head to the crown, combing roots flat as you go. Then, apply mousse from root to ends of hair, combing with a wide-toothed comb, keeping lift at the front and diffusing dry on high speed with low heat.

Nude nails

Nude nails made a return to the runway. Subtle shades of beige and caramel made an appearance at Gucci, Roberto Cavalli and Proenza Schouler. To add dimension to the look, paint nails in a nude half moon, or add DIY graphics with a nail pen.
