Under Armour has developed a face mask designed to be worn while exercising

In the space of a few months, face masks have become a staple of our daily lives.

While we may be exempted from masking up during strenuous exercise, some of us may still prefer to keep our masks on for COVID-19 protection when working out outdoors or at the gym.

To enable athletes to train with face protection without risking hypoxia (lack of oxygen), sportswear brand Under Armour has designed a reusable, water-resistant exercise mask, which is equipped with a mouldable nose-bridge to hold it firmly in place and reduce airflow to the eyes that may cause glasses to fog up.

Christened the UA Sportsmask, the model is built from lightweight fabric with an underlying structure to keep it off the nose and mouth, which facilitates breathing. A thicker intermediate layer has been added, which lets air through, but blocks humidity and perspiration. Currently only available in black, it comes in various sizes ranging from S to XXL. There are plans to introduce it in other colours.

“The fabric used is treated with PROTX2, a non-metal antimicrobial technology that has been shown in laboratory tests to destroy COVID-19,” said the founders of Under Armour.

This technology has already been through laboratory tests and is currently being evaluated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to confirm its efficacy against COVID-19.

The Under Armour exercise mask has proven so popular that it’s already sold out in the US, and is currently only available for pre-order. It’s expected to ship on or before August 17.
