Forget boring. Forget bland. The annual Wild Rice Ball is one of the events to look out for on the social calendar. This year’s theme is about Making History and guests were encouraged to dressed up as their favourite historical figures at the Shangri-la Hotel’s Grand Ballroom. The concert featured a constellation of our island’s brightest theatre stars such as Ivan Heng, Pam Oei, Hossan Leong, Siti Khalijah Zainal, where they took us through Singapore’s 700-year history as a global port and cosmopolitan city. There was also a surprise line-up of leading chefs like Shangri-la’s Heidi Flanagan and Herve Potus with Janice Wong and Kenjiro ‘Hatch’ Hashida, who came up with an exquisite menu inspired by the flavours of Singapore. Other highlights include a set by DJ Keith Colaco and the sumptuous Teochew spread later in the evening. A total of $796,500 at this year’s ball was raised to support programmes like the training and nurturing future generations of Singaporean theatre talent.
