Having always had an independent streak, Jacelyn, appreciator of the art, fashion and jewellery, took the chance to travel to the US when she was 19. “I promised my mum that I would behave and be safe. She was fearful, but I was fearless!” she recalls fondly. That was also the year that her father, a keen amateur photographer, gifted her his Yashica 35mm camera. “I was thrilled,” she shares. “We spent many weekends driving around Singapore, taking lots of photos. He taught me how to use the camera and compose the shots. So much of our time together was spent bonding over our love for sightseeing and photography. We often pored over his collection of travel photographs, and would make slide shows of the photos that we would share at family gatherings.”
Favourite musician that year?
American jazz musician Earl Klugh, who remains one of my favourite artists to date. My dad and I also shared a love for music, and because of his influence, I enjoy tunes from the ’60s right up to the early ’80s.
Advice for your teenage self?
Savour every moment, every event, every memory.
If you were to relive your teenage years, what would you change?
I’d spend even more time with my dad. He gave me so many wonderful memories…
