While completing a New York University business degree, Fang found work at Christie’s, which fuelled his interest in art. Upon graduating, he worked as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs Singapore and moonlighted by curating art exhibitions out of vacant shophouses. His first foray into the Singapore arts scene was an attempt to start a Young Patron’s Circle for art collecting. He has since left the banking industry and recently graduated with an MPA from Harvard and an MBA from Wharton.
Striving to uphold the authentic, local hospitality that he has experienced through couch surfing across more than a hundred countries, Fang founded Figment as a response to his mounting anxiety at repeatedly returning to an ever-changing, copied-and-pasted urban landscape in Singapore. Here, he has assembled a passionate team of local creatives, and together with Singaporean homeowners, they explore and uncover hidden old-world shophouse gems, attempting adaptive reuse and reimagining them as co-living homes.
Currently, he is working on a non-profit art wing, Figment X, to build a community around both art and spaces. “Homes are already beautifully designed by experienced local architects. We think they provide a good atmosphere for relaxed interaction and a more profound experience of art. We don’t intend to be a traditional gallery that represents artists. It’s more of a community experiment inspired by art.”
