Prestige 40 Under 40 2020: Alecia Neo

Alecia Neo

34, Independent Artist

The award-winning arts practitioner just showcased her latest video project ramah-tamah, exploring the coming-of-age, the weight of womanhood and the role of caregiving through the practice of chewing betel quid, at the Asian Civilisations Museum for the Singapore Heritage Festival. Developing projects that involve collaborative partnerships, her socially engaged practice works primarily with photography, video, installations and workshops.

In 2014, Alecia founded Unseen Art Initiatives, a volunteer-led platform for differently abled artists where she is the lead researcher for a pilot Touch Collection at Singapore Art Museum, studying the best practices for visual arts and inclusive practices in museums focusing on visual impairment.

Also the co-founder and artist lead of Brack, a socially engaged arts platform for Southeast Asian art and cultural practitioners, she looks forward to embarking on Ubah Rumah, or “home of change”, as she interprets it. The art residency programme and research outpost on Nikoi Island in Bintan seeks to create artworks and experiences that integrate the region’s rich biodiversity, traditional practices and maritime history. “It will be launched officially in 2021 due to Covid-19, but we believe this disruption has offered us a timely pause to revisit our ideas. We hope it will be a conduit for learners of local practices and knowledge in the Riau islands.”
