Darren Gan is making the big dreams of small children come true: You can play as a grown-up. Started in 2004, his company Play Imaginative — a collectible toy design and production firm — first rose to prominence with its hugely successful Trexi figures. Also in their toy chest are DC Comics characters Batman, Superman and The Flash in their new armoured costumes, as well as a license portfolio that includes Disney, Paul Frank and Spongebob Squarepants. Earlier this year, the company also sealed a licensing deal with Marvel for Greater China, with a line-up based on the Iron Man movies. An avid Transformers fan, the 34-year-old Temasek Polytechnic Product and Industrial Design graduate admits that his wish list of characters come from the animated series. “That’s something I would be really excited to work on,” he says. In 2008, Play Imaginative also launched the annual Singapore Toys, Games and Comics Convention, the first of its kind convention in Asia thronged by masses of fanboys, designers and artists.
