Powered by Special Olympics Asia Pacific and Human R.A.C.E, #MyNormal campaign is a vehicle to raise public awareness for people with disabilities.
The pandemic has turned our routines topsy turvy — working from home, staying in and not meeting our friends has become a new normal. But for people with intellectual disabilities, this is and has always been their normal.
Special Olympics Asia Pacific, a global inclusion movement using sport, health, education and leadership programmes around the world to end discrimination against and empower people with intellectual abilities, together with Human R.A.C.E, is a platform that gives a voice to special needs athletes and the community around them. Together, they want to shape a new normal for people with disabilities.
Many of them have lived in isolation and been ignored for most parts of their lives, and the #MyNormal campaign is a vehicle to raise public awareness for this group of people. It is also a fundraising initiative (via here and here) to help people with intellectual disabilities across 35 countries via its leadership development, heath and fitness, as well as research programmes.
In addition, the #MyNormal campaign is part of #GivingTuesdayNow, a new global day dedicated to giving back to society across over 60 countries, whether it’s monetary or food donations or simply making time for a cause close to your heart.
So how can you be part of this #MyNormal movement?
- From now till 30 June, tell people one thing that has become your normal due to COVID-19.
- Tag three friends and challenge them to tell the world what has become their normal. This can be done by sharing your picture of doing the task and a caption.
- Alternatively, you can hold up a paper with your #MyNormal message written in it.
I used to hang out with my friends all the time, now staying home and being by myself has become #MyNormal. Did you know that many people with intellectual disabilities do not have the opportunity to work or socialise with others? Find out more here [Include donation links Giving.sg and/or Simply Giving]
I challenge @xyz, @abc, and @eft to share what has become your normal.
