Carb your enthusiasm: The best bakeries in Singapore that deliver bread to your doorstep

Who can really say no to carbs?

Keto diets may have taken the world by storm, but during these trying pandemic times, we all need a little cheat day (or days, or weeks) to feel better.

Research has proven that carbohydrates promote the production of serotonin, the “feel-good” hormone, which is why we get a sense of comfort from pigging out on a good carb-rich meal.

Today, we’re championing one of our favourites: Bread. No, we’re not talking about the white, packaged bread you can get from the supermarket. We’re dreaming about loaves of sourdough, baguettes and rows of freshly buttered buns.

If you’re not particularly keen on making your own, you’re in luck. Read on for our list of the best bakeries and restaurants that are offering bread deliveries of their artisanal loaves and quality buns.

Tablescape, an elegant modern European restaurant located within Grand Park City Hall, has launched a bread and butter set available for home delivery and takeaway. It features five different breads: A massive sourdough round loaf, an exquisitely fluffy brioche, an aromatic onion bun, a nutty multi-grain roll, and a crumbly baguette. These are accompanied by sea salt, housemade truffle oil and jars of unsalted and lobster butter. The latter is especially indulgent as it’s made from a combination of fresh butter with concentrated lobster bisque. We recommend slathering the onion bun with a generous portion of the lobster butter and a light sprinkling of sea salt for an umami-rich flavour bomb.

To keep things interesting, Tablescape plans to rotate most of the bread selection on a quarterly basis — only the sourdough will remain a fixture. If you’ve been missing the restaurant’s old-school bread trolley service that has been an iconic element of its dine-in experience, you can get your hands on this set by ordering online, calling +65 6336 3456, or emailing [email protected].

Famed for its buttery croissants and Kouign Amann, Tiong Bahru Bakery now offers island-wide delivery of its delicious bakes. Tuck into its crisp baguettes and chewy sourdough, or go for its scrumptious buns packed with savoury fillings of pulled pork and smoked salmon. The Croque Monsieur — an oven-baked sandwich stuffed with ham, Emmental cheese and béchamel sauce — is also another easy favourite.

Nothing appeals to us more than a bakery that takes pride in its work. Bread & Hearth emphasises on serving freshly baked bread every day, all made with age-old bread-making techniques using French wheat flour and butter. Expect only quality ingredients and hearty flavours here as you pig out on its bread. Besides savoury focaccia and soft, chewy ciabatta, it also dishes out beautiful olive bread and buns as well. Islandwide delivery is available.

Artisanal French bakery Maison Kayser was founded by Eric Kayser in 1996, and is now complete with stores across more than 20 countries around the world. Each morning, the artisan bakers from Maison Kayser begin their day by using natural leaven and a long fermentation process to create their addictive treats. These include savoury goods like sourdough and quiches, as well as sweet, flaky pastries such as danishes and chocolate croissants — all of which are available for home delivery.

Japanese bakes often champion, light, fluffy textures and unique flavours that cater to the Asian market, which is why we truly enjoy getting our carb fix from Boulangerie Asanoya.
