All through the course of its history, SK-II’s seasonal limited edition bottles for Facial Treatment Essence are as much iconic as the Pitera-rich product itself. Year after year, revered artists and A-listers have been enlisted with painting their imagination onto the essence’s package. This year, with SK-II’s massive rebranding that sees the Japanese luxury beauty house embarking on a viral, pop culture-oriented take on its content and communications, the design of their best-loved FTE’s bottles feel like a catharsis of what SK-II aims to be remembered from now on.
First thing first, it’s not just about the bottle design. This festive season, SK-II reimagines the legendary heritage of their Pitera through elements of pop culture — manga, mixed reality and music. The storyline remains the same: a chance encounter at a sake brewery where an old Toji’s miraculously youthful-looking hand strikes a stark contrast to his wrinkled face unlocked the secret power of Pitera. But here comes the twist — the legend now comes alive through the eyes of none other than “imma,” Japan’s first computer-generated model, who discovers and then acquires, the superpower of Pitera. Imma’s new journey brings her to SK-II’s favourite faces: singer/ songwriter Leah Dou, actress Haruka Ayase and supermodel Behati Prinsloo. The quartet celebrate their discovery and transform the world around them into bold manga patterns by world-famous visual artist Fantasista Utamaro.
