For those who can’t live a day without lighting a candle to set the mood for their home, Cire Trudon is surely a household name. The legendary maker of scented candles with a history dated as far back as the seventeenth century, its candling savoire-faire is a national treasure — a cherished wisdom and craftsmanship of the bygone centuries that remain in practice up until the present.
The story of Cire Trudon began in 1643, when Claude Trudon founded a boutique on the rue Saint-Honoré where he developed his activity as a grocer and candler. He soon established a manufacturing company, producing candles from beeswax for home and churches. His candle-making know-how was developed extensively during the early eighteenth century — resulting in a perfectly white candle that wowed the court of Louis XV and the kingdom’s largest parishes.
The manufacture survives the tumultuous period of French politics. It continued to supply the Imperial court of Napoleon the 1st, and was never disrupted even after industrial revolutions and the arrival of electricity. With solid candle-making know-how and a manufacturing facility that had survived the tide of time and many revolutions, the company reestablished itself as producer of scented candles with the name Cire Trudon in 2007, enlisting well-known noses to craft a scent for the stories it wishes to tell. Each candle is still dripped and made by hand, perpetuating a luxury manufacturing skills of its founder Claude Trudon.
Inside the atelier of Cire Trudon lies a manufacturing know-how dated back over 300 years. The development of scents involves not just the creativity and impeccable talent of world-class perfumer, but also a rigorous process of testing the formula by mixing the perfume withe the wax in the laboratory.
All Cire Trudon candles are handmade in the factory in Normandy, from setting up the wicks to pouring the wax by hand in the glass. After making sure the surface is perfectly smooth, the wick is cut at a specific height to ensure an optimal first burning.
What’s in a Cire Trudon Glass Jar?
Each glass of candle is hand-crafted in a shape inspired by champagne buckets in Tuscany, making it a unique art piece. The emblem of the brand is inspired by a bas relief at a Royal Wax Manufacture which used to belong to the Trudon family. Another symbol you can see on the label is beehive — a tribute to the bees that contributed to the quality of the candles throughout centuries. The glass also bears the emblem of King Louis XIV, who had the Royal Wax Manufacture created. The perfectly white candle is a result of the wax being filtered, washed and exposed to sunlight.
The Popular Scents
Currently, Cire Trudon offers nearly 30 scented candles, each coming in 2-3 sizes. However, three most iconic ones are ABD El Cader, Cyrnos, Ernesto. Abd El Cader, named after the founder of the Algerian State, simulates the scent of a gust of freedom blowing from the Mascara coast, and the mountains picks up on its way the green scents of fresh mint, the rashness of fights, ginger’s hot and peppered air and the perfume of tea and tobacco from the Ouled Nail tribe. Cyrnos, named after the villa of Empress Eugénie, recreates the olfactory atmosphere of a party in the villa’s garden by the Mediterranean shores with a citrusy scent warmed by fig and lavender. Ernesto, however, is a scent we would recommend for an elegant living room shrouded in the dark brown colour of leather and wood, and red fabric. It’s the scent named after revolution icon Che Guevara, and evokes the image of smokes of cigars and the barrels of guns.
La Promeneuse and the Bust
Ironically, scented candles are no longer in your home just for their scent. Achieving its status as a decorative item, candles come in different guises designed to be a part of your interior aesthetics. Cire Trudon is the name behind two most iconic scented decorative items: La Promeneuse and the Bust, each with its own charm and functionality beyond its sumptuous scent. We regret to say this but the bust is not yet available in Thailand as of this moment, though.
