A trip to The Shangri-La when you’re not a guest at the hotel is still a real treat. It’s simply a sanctuary for serenity and luxury, right on Bangkok’s River of Kings, the Chao Phraya. The luxury hotel is no newbie to Bangkok’s hospitality scene, as it opened its doors to guests in August of 1986.
A particular wing of the hotel we paid special attention to on our last visit was the Krungthep Wing, the second, smaller and more exclusive tower that opened in 1991. Steeped in a rich history of luxury hospitality, the wing is home to a spa that caught our hearts, none other than CHI Spa. Keen to see more before you read our review? Watch the video below.
This spa puts the capital C in Chi. The 1,000-square metre interiors have a Tibetan aesthetic, with designs inspired by traditional Asian healing philosophies which aim to restore personal harmony and balance.
The spa features 10 treatment suites, including the couples’ rooms, with a setting is conducive to total relaxation, cleverly equipped with a Jacuzzi bath, herbal steam and shower, relaxation lounge and changing, toilet and vanity areas. CHI gives you the luxury of personal space and timelessness for an incredibly relaxing experience.
Tried and Tested
If you’re going to go to the Shangri-La, you may as well make a morning or afternoon of it. That’s why we decided to pamper ourselves with a 3.5-hour treatment. This started first and foremost with a Chakra Cleansing Bath. The jet tub lights up different colours when you enter, and the colours are meant to stimulate the different energy centres of your seven chakras. This supposedly improves blood circulation and relieves muscle tension. Following about 30 minutes in the tub, I spent 15 minutes in the steam room, which proved to be very relaxing before my even more relaxing body treatment commenced.
Then came the Local Coconut Sugar Body Polish. The exfoliator smells divine and is used to remove impurities and toxins from the skin via a gentle polishing. Once my full body was covered with the polish, I gleefully washed it off in the shower, scrubbing everything off. My skin felt clean, soft and smooth.
If you’re not into exfoliators, another alternative is to do a body mask. On another occasion, we tried the indigenous Thanaka Body Mask, which has been used by Burmese women for over 2,000 years to nourish and smoothen skin, due to its rich Vitamin E content. The paste is made from ground bark that has a fragrant scent, similar to that of sandalwood. When undergoing this treatment, the paste is applied to the full body and you are wrapped up and left there for about 30 minutes before you wash it off. Please note it can get quite hot and stuffy being buried under wraps and blankets.
Once showered, I was ready to enjoy a nice relaxing Aromatherapy Massage. I used a vanilla-based essential oil. The massage combined light-to-medium pressure, addressed my sore muscle points on my back and all round reduced a lot of tension that had been building up over the weeks.
Then followed the facial. I tried the Intensely Hydrating Facial, an excellent deep-cleanse that is meant to repair the damage caused by pollutants. A very useful option for Bangkokians. The facial is driven by a passion for the sea, using marine-based skin products. My face appeared visibly brighter, hydrated and all the more fresh. This is recommended for all skin types.
You can tailor any treatment to your heart’s content. Signature treatments at the Shangri-La’s CHI Spa include CHI Balance, CHI Hot Stones Massage, CHI Rescue Release and Yin Yang Harmonising Massage.
Other choices include the Refreshing Water Ritual, CHI Skin Polish, CHI Journeys and the “Sense of Place” menu reflecting a true sense of Thailand. These treatments use local ingredients and time-honoured healing traditions such as Jasmine Rice Body Glow and the heavenly smelling Thai Herbal Compress.
