On the heels of Bangkok’s hottest summer months is always that inevitable rainy-spell. When it pours most of the day and drizzles during the rest, the puddle-ridden pavements and bipolar weather can make it rather irksome to be out and about. Nonetheless, you shouldn’t let a little inclement weather stop you from having fun — which is why we’ve rounded up the best indoor activities here for you! A little Prestige Planner spin-off, tailored for the rainy season, scroll to see how you could be having fun despite the pour outside.
Set the mood at home.
Rainy days can go both ways — they either give you a warm “snuggle under the blankets” vibe, or lack of motivation and a bad headache. When faced with the latter, transform the environment from unpleasant to absolutely decadent by setting the right mood in your nest. Here, a few fine touches can go a long way. Light a few soft, scented candles, and choose a soothing soundtrack to your day to put on in the background — few things work as well as aromatherapy and good music to make a dreary day great again!
Warm up with hot drinks and treats.
Here’s an upside to the rainy season — we won’t have to wait till December for those rare cooler days. This makes it an ideal time to catch up on all those tantalizing hot drinks and treats you’ve long eyed but never got around to trying because iced options always seemed more reasonable. Whether it’s creamy rich hot choc or a serving of freshly-made s’mores, a warm sweet treat might be just the pick-me-up you need!
Get in shape.
We get it — bad weather makes it all the more tempting to stay in bed all day. That doesn’t mean dreary skies should make you give up on your fitness regime. Luckily for you — and your body! — there are plenty of indoor fitness options to help stay fit and healthy. If you’re used to morning jogs at Lumpini, shake things up a bit by trying something new. Book yourself a rhythm cycling class at Tribe (45 minutes can burn up to 800 calories, just as a motivational fun fact) or why not try your hand at a session of hot yoga to keep yourself warm?
Or try a fun indoor-activity, like roller derby.
Alright, maybe getting up at 7am on a rainy day and heading out for spin-class is too much of a stretch. Still, it’s definitely a good idea to go out and get active, and maybe have a go at some of the exciting, indoor activities that have so far missed your radar. An interesting option is roller derby — a full-contact point-scoring game played on roller skates on an oval track. Fast, fun and for skaters of every shape, size and fitness level, this makes the perfect indoor activity if you’re looking for an interesting and out-of-the-box way to spend your day. Try it out at Emporium’s Roller Dome, for THB200 per day.
Visit an art gallery.
If you’re thinking of having a “slow day”, why not get inspired with a trip to an art gallery? Take your significant other out on a date, go with your friends or even take it solo — there are enough galleries and exhibitions in the city to keep you occupied for hours. You can either opt to gallery hop or if you don’t want to be travelling in the rain, head straight to a place like MOCA, where you can spend the entire day browsing through multiple floors of art. With Thailand’s largest collection of modern art, MOCA makes an ideal spot to marvel at fascinating blends of local styles, conceptual pieces and a touch of the surreal.
Watch a play.
For those who don’t regularly go to the theatre, plays often bring to mind images of school productions, or extravagant musicals. While those are entertaining and definitely worth your time — in fact, musicals deserve their own recommendation as prime rainy day activity — plays actually encompass much more than that. Often incredibly immersive, moving and powerful expressions of art and creativity, you should check them out, if you aren’t already a fan of the theatre. While the scene in Thailand is still relatively small, there are an increasing number of independent theatre groups that perform in various galleries and art spaces, while Esplanade’s Muangthai Ratchadalai Theatre continues to offer large-scale shows. Both offer great experiences — for a reference of which shows are taking place this month, check out FB @theshowhopper.th.
Pamper yourself with a spa treatment.
Let’s face it — sometimes with rainy days, you actually just want to stay indoors and do nothing, and there’s just no helping it. If you’re feeling in that mood, why not take the time to treat yourself a little, and indulge in ways you normally wouldn’t — like by going all out with the spa treatments. In fact, rainy season or not, it’s always a good idea to give yourself a time out from the city’s hustle and bustle, and give your body the rejuvenation that it needs.
