8 Great Art Shows to Check Out in March

As we settle into the month of March, the gallery scene in Bangkok remains as vibrant as ever, with art shows large and small

When talking about what the art scene in Bangkok has in store for gallery goers in March, there are plenty of interesting new shows and art spaces to seek out and explore. But do also keep in mind that BAB 2020 has had one more extension added to its run, as the artworks at The Prelude One Bangkok space, which includes a piece by Prateep Suthathongthai, will remain on view until the end of April. In addition, be sure to mark your calendars now for the upcoming Mango Art Festival, which takes over the riverside Lhong 1919 complex from April 3rd to April 6th (rescheduled from mid-February), and features works by some of Thailand’s rising art stars.

CROSS OVER VOL.28
Kalwit Studio & Gallery: Until March 14

As it only runs until mid-month, now’s the time to go to Kalwit Studio & Gallery for the Japanese Art Collective show entitled Cross Over Vol.28. This diverse group exhibition has been organized by artist Peddy Pot, and features the artistic talents of Akari Kawagoe, Eri Sakurai, Error City, Hikari Morizuki, Jupiter, Karabako, Linn S, Nogchi Yuka, Okaramaru, Pati, Pito, Ren Kudo, Satake Teruyo, Takahashi Hikaru, Tatebe Miki, Yaka Miura, Yamamoto Nori, and Yoko Akita.

SPACE OF 25 LIGHT YEARS
JWD Art Space: Until March 31

Artist Takerng Pattanopas’s practice emerges from his twin obsessions – the space within and the space without. Over many years, he has continued to examine symbolic representations of the interior of the human body as they can be related to ideas of the infinite cosmos. This preoccupation can be considered distinctly 21st century, suggesting a strong sense of zeitgeist. His much talked-about current show – entitled the Space of 25 Light Years, on display until the end of the month at JWD Art Space – hybridizes sculpture, installation, and painting through an examination of voids, microscopic visualizations of the body, tunnels, and monoliths (the latter motif inspired by the mysterious and impenetrable objects of Arthur C. Clarke’s novels and Stanley Kubrick’s famed film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

ALLEGORY
Number 1 Gallery: March 6-27

Artist Verapong Sritrakulkitjakarn is the focus of a solo show on at Number 1 Gallery entitled Allegory. In this series of oil paintings he combines the beauty and truth of everyday things around us – which are sometimes overlooked – with past and present lives and seemingly unseen connections. However, through a patchwork of stories that can sometimes be seen as irrelevant, he believes that, in fact, everything is connected and relevant. It’s his belief that the image should also generate a specific situation that arises in the mind of the viewer, so the opportunity exists for the audience to perceive the works in many dimensions (hence , the pieces are not limited to a “single” meaning).

THE IMMORTALS ARE QUITE BUSY THESE DAYS
Bangkok CityCity Gallery: Until March 21

Bangkok CityCity Gallery’s current show, entitled The Immortals Are Quite Busy These Days, represents artist Nawin Nuthong’s most significant endeavour yet to disambiguate the ideas of the “Threshold” – a limit that can be surpassed through ardent undertakings, and whose coordinates of access are marked by “Threshold Guardians” who simultaneously serve as barriers to entry. Within the exhibition, the computer game serves as metaphor, illustration, and tool for the re-inscription of the operating mechanics of the human condition of existence.

HERSPECTIVE
Rosewood Bangkok Gallery: Until May 31

The Rosewood Bangkok hotel, in collaboration with SAC Gallery, presents the group exhibition Herspective, featuring Thidarat Chantachua, Praiya Ketkool, Thanathorn Suppakijjumnong, and Aor Sutthiprapha. This show commemorates International Women’s Day (March 8th) by encouraging and supporting these four female emerging artists, each of whom shows a high potential for artistic growth and development. If tenderness, sensitivity, simplicity, and vulnerability are considered common attributes of women, this exhibition reflects the converse side womanhood with its displays of determination and wisdom.

ART IN POSTCARDS
Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC): Until August 31

The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre Foundation, together with the Artist Network, presents an “art show” that doubles as a fundraising project. Originally, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) funded approximately 45% of the BACC’s total income, but since 2018 the BMA has ceased its support, making management very difficult. Hence, the BACC team has initiated a ‘BACC Fundraising Project 2021’ to engage the public in supporting this important municipal art space. The first activity of the project has created a special postcard set, showcasing the talents of 12 Thai artists: Ploy Chariyaves, Manoth Kitticheewan, Yuree Kensaku, Nakrob Moonmanas, Lolay, Nut Dao, give.me.museums, Juli Baker and Summer, Rukkit, Katchakul, faan.peeti, and Inflowerlesson. THE STUDY OF A LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP
Nova Contemporary: Until April 20

Nova Contemporary’s interior has been transformed into a showcase for Aracha Cholitgul, an interdisciplinary artist whose works focus on exploring new perspectives and meanings through paintings, drawings, installations, and writings. The exhibit is entitled The Study of a Long Distance Relationship, and the works were created during the time where Cholitgul was questioning the meaning of home; drawing from her own personal experience of uncertainties, emotional distance, and the complexity of relationships. The exhibition also draws upon objects that evoke deep reflections, such as an armchair from Cholitgul’s childhood which brings to mind how one experiences a sense of belonging.

THE DISTANT CONVERSATIONS
RCB Galleria, 2nd floor, River City Bangkok: March 10 – April 30

Curated by La Lanta Fine Art, The Distant Conversations is an upcoming group exhibition at RCB Galleria (2nd floor, River City Bangkok), showcasing 13 international artists, residing in four separate countries: Cambodia, Israel, Thailand, and The Philippines. Several art genres will be on display, such as pop art, classical, abstract, and realism. Meanwhile, a number of different artistic disciplines are represented, such as printmaking, oil and acrylic painting, paper cutting, and mixed media of ceramic and yarn. The title refers to the discourse of creative minds that goes beyond geographical boundaries, and a few of the renowned artists taking part are David Gerstein (Israel), Jason Montinola (Philippines), Christian Develter (Belgium via Cambodia), and from Thailand: Attasit Pokpong, Supmanee Chaisansuk, Nilraya Bundasak, Morakot Ketklao, and more.
