The home-away-from-home vacation concept has become such a cliché that it’s lost all meaning. Samujana, a collection of stunning contemporary villas on the northeastern coast of Koh Samui, has reinvented this philosophy altogether. It’s neither a resort, nor a residential estate, but somewhat of a hybrid. A given though is that you’ll be right at home, and soon discover that checking out is the hardest thing to do…
Consisting of 27 villas (two to eight bedrooms) of majestic proportions and boasting imposing architecture – the work of GFAB Architects – Samujana villas takes a modern cue from the surrounding landscape, making use of natural features such as large rock outcrops and mature trees that have been integrated into the design. Open living spaces with sunken lounge areas and naturally ventilated (covered) terraces offer an outdoor lifestyle alongside infinity pools to make the most of never ending jungle and ocean vistas.
All privately owned and fully equipped – kitchen, BBQ area, AV tech, WiFi connectivity, the whole shebang – 25 of the villas are up for short-term rental, and are ideal for a group of friends or families who enjoy getaways together. With tasteful décor inside out, fully serviced and complemented by a 24-hour butler service, a high emphasis is placed on the comfort and convenience of guests. While a homey feeling is evident, services and facilities are matched by those offered at five-star resorts.
The biggest benefit is the freedom of choice – to dine out at nearby Chaweng Beach, meals prepared by your own chef or delivered to your villa, or you could opt for a memorable poolside barbecue. Indeed, you don’t need to lift a finger, unless of course you choose to.
Some of the villas (called ‘Spectacular Villas’) feature private fitness rooms, games rooms, state-of-the-art cinemas, pool tables, spa rooms, Jazuzzis and table tennis. Equally impressive is the list of guest services on offer, from a massage and spa service to fitness experiences like yoga, Pilates and muay thai – all offered in your villa.
Yacht charters on the luxury catamaran Kindred Spirit provide half-day, full-day or sunset excursions, and then there’s golf at nearby Santiburi Samui Country Club, Walking Street at the Fisherman’s Village on Friday evenings (highly recommended), and all sorts of other attractions and activities that have put Koh Samui on any traveller’s must-do list.
Samujana offers the best of two worlds. It feels like home – albeit a very big home – but you’re very much spoiled, just like staying at a fine resort.
