Taking quite a few of us by surprise, Chinese New Year arrives rather early this year. As those of us who uphold the tradition get ready to make the relevant preparations, it is always nice to take a step back and keep in mind the spirit of Chinese New Year, which is to honour family, and reunite with our loved ones.

On another note, the month of January is also gradually coming to a close, and the city continues to buzz with exciting happenings. From the return of Patom’s Green Market, to the launch of a bookstore at Bangkok CityCity Gallery, we’ve rounded up the best events to catch in town this week.

NEWS & EVENTS — After the success of the first edition, The Green Market at Patom is back for a second round. Set once again in the beautiful gardens of Patom, the joint effort between Patom Organic Living and the Creators Fair will feature over 30 eco-friendly vendors selling anything and everything from organic and vegan food, to sustainable products, natural skin care, home wear, clothing, and more. Alongside the stalls, there will also be a series of fun workshops for both adults and kids to enjoy, offering a perfect spot to while away your Saturday.

10am-4pm, January 25, 2020. Patom Organic Living. To find out more, visit the official Facebook event page

ART & CULTURE — Marking the official opening of Bangkok CityCity Bookshop, this inaugural exhibition introduces publishing projects from Bangkok’s independent publishers, publishing houses, and institutions. The event features a special Bookmark project, especiallly held by Napisa Leelasuphapong and Kantida Busaba, to encourage conversations through bookmarks containing exchanges that go from one book to another. The title of the exhibition brings to light the idea of what role a library plays in a contemporary setting, while also highlighting the bookshop’s approach in combining an independent bookstore with a public library — here, multiple copies of books are sold until the last remaining copy, which is kept as a library archive to share with the public.

The opening will take place from 2-5pm, January 25, 2020. The exhibition will continue until March 29, 2020. Bangkok CityCity Gallery. To find out more, visit the official Facebook event page

WINE & DINE — In celebration of Chinese New Year, Bkkbarcrawl is hosting a special event across iconic bars in the soi Nana/Chinatown area. Meet at Oneday Wallflowers, and expect a night of Chinese New Year themed activities, complimentary themed drinks, private tuk tuk transportation to various venues, and a fun, friendly crowd of individuals enjoying a night of great drinks and live DJ performances. There will even be chances to receive red envelopes throughout the evening, as a nod to the traditional custom.

THB700 per ticket. 7:30pm-2am, January 25, 2020. Oneday Wallflowers. To find out more, visit the official Facebook event page

NEWS & EVENTS — To celebrate the lunar new year, Central Embassy joins the festivities with the launch of a Chinese Playground theme. Expect thrilling performances such as a dragon show, traditional Chinese ribbon dancing, as well as coloured lions that wander all across the mall offering blessings. The celebration sees the ground floor decorated to resemble a Chinese playground, along with a special Chinese-style cafe pop-up courtesy of 103 Bed & Brews, serving a selection of sweet treats and beverages exclusively prepared for Chinese New Year. Another corner contains a display of Chinese lanterns, while you’ll also find a Lucky Orange Tree where you can hang notes and try your hand at calligraphy.
