Happy Loy Krathong Festival! This year, it is heartwarming to see various five-star hotels by the riverside offering the option of eco-friendly krathongs — while you’re enjoying the festivities, it is always nice to remember and be aware of how our actions impact the environment around us. On another note, this week sees a rather exciting selection of events taking place throughout the city. For one thing, we have reached the final edition of the Art Rotation at 137 Pillars Suites and Residences, and the hotel will be doing a special exhibition on “outsider art”. Maho Rasop festival is back, while we also see the return of Broadway in Bangkok… Unplugged. Scroll to see your plans!
ART & CULTURE — Proof that time flies incredibly fast, 137 Pillars Suites and Residences Bangkok is already launching the seventh — and last — edition of their art rotation. This installment of the popular rotating art showcase rings with extra significance, showcasing ‘Outsider Art’ — art created by individuals who do not have formal training. A celebration of local talent, as well as a large part of the hotel’s CSR efforts, 137 Pillars Suites and Residences will be supporting two foundations — the Autistic Thai Foundation and Na Kittikoon Foundation — that use art to empower and encourage the creativity of individuals with autism spectrum disorder. To celebrate the opening day of the exhibition, a special performance will be held, dubbed ‘Draw Me Raw: Street Artists x Outsider Artists’. The first of its kind, the event will see four well-known street artists — Kiatanan Iamchan (Line Censor), Praphassorn Butphrom (Earth), Phuraphol Sotaiyin (Sow), and Terdtanwa Kanama (Turn) — join a pair-off with four “outsider artists” from the two foundations. Together, each duo will produce unique works of art that will also be sold during the event.
The opening night is set to take place from 6pm onwards, November 13, 2019. The exhibition will run until January 8, 2020. 137 Pillars Suites & Residences Bangkok. To find out more, visit 137pillarsbangkok.com.
ART & CULTURE — As part of the Unfolding Kafka Festival 2019, a father and son duo — Sylvian and Charlie — try to express their paternal bonds of filiation through a physical performance. Through a moving and profound dance, the two explore the figure of a father and that of a child — there is a sense of trust, tenderness, and the desire to play. Reflecting also Kafka’s work, which is profoundly influenced by his relationship with his father, ‘Des Gestes Blancs’ brings to light the nuanced relationship shared between a parent and a child, and invites audiences to examine the contradiction portrayed through the work.
ART & CULTURE — For those who missed the first production earlier this year, Broadway in Bangkok… Unplugged is back! Starring Daniel Koek — known for having played the lead role of Jean Valjean in the original London production of Les Misérables — and Harriet Jones, who played Christine Daae in The Phantom, expect a thrilling night of classic Broadway songs. They will be joined on stage by winners of RBSO’s 2019 Young Talent Sings Broadway Concert. The performances include iconic songs from old and new Broadway musicals — think the likes of Les Misérables, In the Heights, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Rent, West Side Story, Beauty and the Beast, Miss Saigon, and more.
