Tanunya “Namwan” Thanakitamnuay is the heir of ready-to- wear fashion empire AIIZ, and is back at work now after giving birth to her son, Thann, two years ago. Her main priority these days is balancing work with being a mother and being a wife. Time management is essential for her, and she positively beams as she starts talking about her son.
“Thann is very cheerful and friendly, and he loves to talk,” she remarks. “Whoever you are he can find a conversation. He’s a good talker. He’ll talk about shapes and colours, and he’s already talking about cars. He has a very good memory too. When I say something, he’ll remember it straight away.
“I do miss him when I’m not with him, but when you work, you focus on your work,” she adds. “But I know he is taken care of by my mum. Some days though, when work is too long, I just wanna go home to him.”
Pregnancy went pretty smoothly for Namwan thanks to her mother, who instilled in her a belief that doing yoga, exercise, and meditation is very important. “I tried to think of only positive things throughout so that Thann could come out as a positive child. My mum gave me this Indian mantra from one of her gurus that I would say every day, which apparently helps your child understand everything you say from birth. It turns out he is above average for his age, he understands everything I say. We understand each other and communicate well, and he doesn’t throw that many tantrums.”
Motherhood has given Namwan a chance to learn new things as well, especially something she never did much of before, which is cooking. “I have to know he is eating well, so I read lots of books so I can cook for him. Before I had zero knowledge of this.”
She is also reading up on the Montessori style of education, which focuses on the independence of one’s child, and harnessing their creativity. For instance, instead of giving children toys, you give them a piece of wood and other natural objects so they can build their own things to play with.
“I consciously want to set a good example for my son so he can grow up into a better person than me and my husband could ever be. Every day is a milestone to behold, every moment is special to me as he grows up”.
