It’s a historical moment for Chanel in Thailand when the French maison recreated their renowned Cruise 2018-2019 show along the Chao Phraya river on October 31. The second iteration of the collection, which was first presented at Paris’ Grand Palais in May, called for guests to rendez-vous at the prestigious Mandarin Oriental Hotel to mingle and muse about the tender to their destination that was as yet unknown.
Boarding the ship from Mandarin Oriental Bangkok to Chanel’s Pier No 5 are house ambassadors Lily-Rose Depp, Tilda Swinton, Caroline de Maigret, Soo Joo Park, Pharrell Williams and Gaspard Ulliel as well as Hong Kong actress Angela Yuen, Taiwanese singer 9M88 and Thailand’s very own world-famous export Chutimon “Aokbab” Chuengcharoensukying and Palm d’Or-winning director Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

The joyful collection burst onto the land-locked deck of the whimsical cruise ship La Pausa, light fabrics and fluid silhouettes perfectly at home in the balmy Bangkok breeze. Models in their candy-coloured palette of cottons, silks and the House’s iconic tweeds echoed Gabrielle Chanel herself with their subtle blend of nonchalance and style. With Cruise collections owing their existence to the designer, it was as much a celebration of origins, as it was of destinations.
Nights aboard the good ship La Pausa were made for dancing. Amongst local acts Thaitanium featuring Srei, Soo Joo Park was DJ, and fellow CHANEL ambassador Pharrell Williams took to the stage for the first time in Bangkok.
