2018 proved a noteworthy year for the local art scene, with the first ever Bangkok Art Biennale and the introduction of Bangkok Design Week by TCDC. Following the success of round one, Bangkok Design Week is back for seconds this year, set to take place this Sunday through till February 3.
Last year’s week-long affair saw the riverside buzz with art-related happenings, food and drinks as some of our favourite galleries and bars joined hands for what proved to be one of the most exciting events to hit Charoenkrung. This years’ event promises all that and more. Here we’ve put together a lowdown on everything you need to know.
The Theme is ‘Fusing Forward’
This year, Bangkok Design Week explores a multidisciplinary approach to art and design — namely, how traditional crafts and practices can be fused with modern technology to take the design scene to the next level. With the aim of reflecting Bangkok’s potential in being a hub for creatives and artistic talents, the event brings together various disciplines from old to new, local and international, for a whole new creative journey.
There Will Be Five Key Activities
Similar to last year, Bangkok Design Week 2019 will take place across various spots in Bangkok including the ever-creative Charoenkrung, Klong San area, Sukhumvit and Rama I. With an array of interesting activities and exhibitions popping up throughout the week, the entire event can be categorised into five key categories.
Showcase & Exhibition sees prototypes and products exhibited by local designers and creative businesses, along with participants from cities around the globe. Creative minds from Thailand and beyond will also be featured in Talk & Workshop.
For those who prefer something more dynamic, there will be music performances, film screenings, artistic performances and even open houses — one of which is the Jim Thompson House! — under Event & Program, supporting creatives by letting them express their passions through various outlets.
In the Creative Market category, entrepreneurs both seasoned and new to the scene are given a platform to find new business opportunities, as well as build new networks and marketing channels.
One of The Activities Is a ‘Creative District Project’
As usual, Bangkok Design Week isn’t just about partying down by the riverside — the streak of bringing about a positive change and making an impact still runs strong. The Creative District Project aims to promote Charoenkrung as a creative district where commercial activities can thrive in harmony to the overall wellbeing of the community.
Serving as a prototype for creative approaches to developing the area, expect explorations into various possibilities, from an increase in green spaces to reusing unused spaces, improving traffic flow and tours.
Hundreds Of Participants Are Involved
Last year’s event by TCD had over 500 partners and collaborators and more than 400,000 visitors throughout the nine days. This year’s team is just as impressive, this time encompassing more than just Thai reps alone.
From designers and skilled craftsmen to entrepreneurs, businesses and even students, the Bangkok Design Week 2019 is truly a joint effort made possible by the unison of various differing industries — public and private, academic institutions and cultural organisations.
