This Friday, March 8 is International Women’s Day — a day that celebrates womanhood, women’s rights and gender equality. Whether or not you yourself are a woman, or have a particular stance on feminism, the fight for equality is one that involves all. If you’re feeling particular in tune with the girl power vibes this week, why not celebrate with some of the events around town. Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel’s R Bar is throwing a ladies night party — fabulous females who wear heels get complimentary snacks! This week also sees the return of Women in Gastronomy, gathering Thailand’s leading female chefs and restauranteurs for an event of moving speeches, wine pairing and, of course, great food. You can also take it easy by heading to Yellow Korner, to check out some of their female vintage collections.
Asides from International Women’s Day, this week also sees quite a few fun happenings in the drink and dine scene. The Bar Upstairs has recently snagged top place at Asia’s first ever Gastromixology Sessions competition by Gin Mare, and will be holding a party to celebrate. Expect an evening of great beats and free-flow Gin Mare. Charoenkrung’s hip izakaya Jua does a pop-up at Suan Plu soi 1’s Smalls, while over at River City Bangkok, four of Thailand’s top artists join hands for a collaborative exhibition unlike any ever seen before. WINE & DINE — Last year, Thailand hosted Asia’s first Gastromixology Sessions competition by Gin Mare. Using Gin Mare as a the key ingredient, the competition saw a friendly battle between ten of Bangkok’s top establishments, and The Bar Upstairs became Asia’s first ever Gastromixology Sessions winner. To celebrate, The Bar Upstairs will be hosting a party with free-flow Gin Mare Tonics, where guests will be able to taste the ‘Clear Coast-to-Coast Martini’ that got them top prize. 7-11pm.
WINE & DINE — Charoenkrung’s hip izakaya joint hits Suan Plu this Thursday, as chef Chet Adkins cooks up a storm at Smalls, as part of their Thursday night pop up series. Expect classic Jua signatures, from tiger prawn ceviche — with avocado, yuzu and crispy taro — to the uni pasta. Also on the menu is Jua’s yellowfin poke, as well as izakaya bites such as pork belly kochujang, thigh leek tare and eringi nori butter with sea salt. Seating is limited, so be sure to book in advance. 7:30-11pm.

WINE & DINE — Gastronauts Asia’s Women in Gastronomy is back for a second time, featuring an impressive lineup of Thailand’s leading female chefs. Talents such as 80/20’s Saki Hoshino, To Chef Thailand judge Pichaya “Pam” Utharantharm and Karmakamet’s Jutamas “Som” Theantae join hands to celebrate and showcase the acclaimed female food personalities from Thailand and beyond. Along with speeches and discussions, this year’s newest feature is ‘Women In Wine’, bringing together some of Italy’s top winemakers for tastings and more. There will also be a special ‘Thailand meets Italy 4-hands dinner’ by Christine Bowerman and Top Chef Thailand winner Chudaree “Tam” Debhakam, who will be cooking together for the first time ever.
ART & CULTURE — This week, why not drop by YellowKorner, the France-based lifestyle photo gallery in Emquartier. New photographers and impressive pieces — including vintage photography — are constantly added to the collection, so there’s always something different to check out. To get yourself into the International Women’s Day mood, why not take a look at YellowKorner’s female vintage collections, which were brought in as part of YellowKorner’s attempt in reiterating the importance of women’s rights. Works include feminine collections by French photographer Juliette Jourdain, as well as emotionally striking pieces by Angelika Buettner.
PAÑPURI WELLNESS presents an exclusive program, featuring well-known Singaporean Yoga Nidra facilitator Youmin Yap. The sessions teach modern city dwellers to embrace and reclaim their rest through Yoga Nidra. Loosely translated as ‘Yogic Sleep’, Yoga Nidra helps to re-energise the body and mind through sleep meditation sessions in which the body is half asleep but still conscious. ART & CULTURE — For the first time ever, four reputable Thai artists join hands for an at exhibition, unveiling their individual identities and unique stylistic approaches. The showcase will include art by Prateep Kochabua, considered Thailand’s top artist and famed for his breathtaking surrealism. Another surprising name in the group is portrait artist Sakwut Wisesmanee, who rarely showcases his individual work anywhere. Also part of the exhibition are dreamy, delicately charming and subtly Art Nouveau works by Suradej Kaewthamai, along with talented young generation artist Anupong Chantorn.
