On January 31st, 2020, a select group of media and VIP guests were invited to GMM Live House, on the 8th Floor of Central World, for an exclusive first look at the brand-new Volvo S60. Billing itself as “Your Signature Drive”, this latest model is a true contender in the luxury sedan class, with impressive driving performance, a supremely comfortable cabin, and a long list of high-tech features. And did we mention it looks just plain gorgeous?
The automobile was unveiled with a dazzling sound, light, and dance display, including an energetic performance by singer Chinawut Indracusin and popular model Kirana Jasmine Chewter (from The Face Thailand, Season 2). Hosting the presentation was Chris Wailes, Managing Director of Volvo Car (Thailand), who remarked that, “With our new member of the family, the all-new Volvo S60, we now have a totally new product to offer in Thailand. 2019 was a great year for us, as we increased the number of new Volvo cars to Thai customers by 63%, and I want to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for placing their trust in us for their driving needs.
“And we’re confident 2020 will be no different, as we continue to grow and the all-new Volvo S60 is a big part of our plans,” he went on to say. “We will launch another exciting variant to our SUV lineup in March, which is sure to get the attention of new car buyers, and we will continue to deliver on our promise of all-new Volvo’s having electrification to further reduce emissions. Our customers are at the core of everything we do, and their satisfaction and safety is our priority.”
The Volvo S60 itself is the longest and widest vehicle in its segment, with a powerful T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid capable of delivering both 407hp and zero-emissions – effortlessly accelerating from 0-100km/h in just 4.4 seconds. The S60 also offers customers a choice of two engines: the R-Design for the sporty look, and the Momentum for a feeling of elegance.
As is to be expected, this perfect balance of performance and comfort comes in an enticingly attractive package. The dynamic Scandinavian design includes a minimalist interior tailored with striking craftsmanship. It’s an uncluttered, yet luxurious space that invites the driver to savour the sense of luxury and focus on enjoying the drive; with fine Nappa perforated leather upholstery in charcoal in the R-Design, and leather upholstery in charcoal and maroon for the Momentum. The sculpted, supportive seats are perfectly contoured for long-distance comfort, and the passenger seats come with 4-way power lumbar support for back relief, plus power fold rear headrest and an adjustable cushion extension. Meanwhile, the Apple Car Play & Android Auto Support, paired with a state-of-the-art premium audio system from Harman Kardon, keeps both driver and passenger connected and entertained.
On the exterior, the colour options available range from crystal white premium metallic, to onyx black metallic, fusion red metallic, and pebble grey metallic (the latest colour addition). The vehicle’s sculpted sides and muscular shoulders above the rear wheel arches give it a sleek profile, while other distinctive design details include the prominent front grille, the long hood and deep front, and the LED headlights with Volvo’s signature ‘Thor’s Hammer’ design. Add to that 5-triple spoke matte black diamond cut 8” x 19” alloy wheels for the R-Design, and 5-Y spoke black diamond cut 7.5” x 18” alloy wheels for the Momentum, and you’ve got yourself one great looking car.
The S60 Volvo is also loaded with high tech safety features, including: active bending headlights (ABL) designed to provide maximum illumination at bends and junctions; a head-up display (HUD) that shows warnings and information relating to speed in the driver’s field of vision; a 360-degree park assist camera; and remote control with keyless entry and drive, along with power-operated handsfree tailgate unlocking.
It’s safe to say that the introduction of the new S60 is set to usher in a new era for Volvo in Thailand. Prices start from just THB2.19M for the Momentum, and THB2.59M for the S60 R-Design.
