Numthong Gallery sits just behind a cluster of cafés and bars of the increasingly fashionable Ari neighbourhood. Its plain white brick structure doesn’t pack much visual punch from the outside, but it is imbued with an unusual warmth and friendliness that exhibition halls don’t normally evoke on the inside.
Numthong owes its flourishing success to simple word of mouth. Since its establishment in 1997, its reputation grew among artists and art enthusiasts for its intriguing selection of contemporary works by both emerging and internationally-acclaimed figures.
The gallery might be commercial by necessity, but it doesn’t feel like the works are chosen from who or what’s in vogue. Khun Numthong, the owner and an art connoisseur himself, claims to not care so much about the current value of a piece or how well it would fare on a wall if it weren’t well recognised; he draws on his extensive experience and handpicks pieces based on the impression they create, their depth of expression and little idiosyncrasies in each work.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that Numthong Gallery is Khun Numthong’s labour of love. He is always on site to greet and guide you through the current showcase. Take care, though, it only houses one exhibition at any given time. So make sure there is something on before you pay a visit.
If you are interested in art books, there is also a library on the top floor and, exhibition or no exhibition, everyone is always welcome to read or do some arty research.
