Beauty items may be one of the best-selling products during the stay-home period, but the absence of seasonal beauty launches during those few months has left all skincare addicts and makeup junkies a little dejected. Along came August when we usually get a lot of new summer makeups and now, everything we’ve missed during the pandemic-stricken period. Here are some of the best beauty items we’ve tested and loved!
Diorshow 2020
The Diorshow 2020 collection is inspired by couture. Each ‘It’ shade in the eyeshadow palettes pays tribute to an iconic Dior runway look. The palettes have also been given a makeover, with new cases, new colours, and six new finishes (matte, satin, pearly, metallic, glitter and highlighter). On top of their high staying power, the eyeshadows are also now infused with skincare ingredients of aloe vera and pine oil for softening and smoothening. We particularly love the Denim palette that celebrates Dior jeans and the Mitzah, which pays homage to Mitzah Bricard, Christian Dior’s muse who was famous for her leopard print looks. Accompany it with the Diorshow 24H1 Stylo liner that glides on effortlessly, and lashings of the Iconic Overcurl for longwear and lash care.

Boy de Chanel
Beauty is not a matter of gender for Chanel. Following the initial launch of foundation, lip balm and eyebrow pencil back in 2018, Boy de Chanel is back with four new products to fit in the grooming routine: Fortifying Gel Moisturizer, Concealer, 3-in-1, Eye Pencil and Le Vernis nail colour. The lightweight gel moisturizer gives a sensation of bare skin and is designed to be used on its own or paired with the foundation. The concealer comes in 8 shades. The non-greasy, glide-on formula is perfect for naturally covering up dark circle, imperfections and signs of fatigue. The matte eye pencil is available in black, brown and navy colours while Le Vernis takes men’s grooming to the next level with a fashion-forward edge in the form of black or natural nail colour.

La Mer The NEW Soft Moisture Powder Foundation SPF 30
August’s hot and humid weather calls for a heavy-duty makeup product that’s easy to use for every busy day. The New Soft Moisture Powder Foundation SPF 30 from La Mer has become our favourite not for just morning routine, but also for touch-up during the day. Unlike the usually thick and cake-y powder foundation, this new formula combines the moisture-soft touch of a fluid foundation with feather-light texture for a comfortable, ‘skin-fit’ feel and fresh, natural look with a soft velvet finish. It glides smoothly on our skin and feels as light as air, despite being water-proof, transfer-proof, sweat-and-humidity-proof!

YSL Le Cushion Encre De Peau
Launched in 2016, the latest reiteration of the bestselling cushion compact still sports the same colourway of black and gold but with a new twist. It is now coated in a chevron quilt, with the YSL Cassandre Logo embellished in the center. As for the formula, it’s gotten an upgrade that still delivers its much-loved matte yet luminous finish. The inclusion of jasmine petals offers antioxidant protection to keep skin radiant. Its new Neo Skin Powder active, sourced from natural ingredients from YSL Beauté’s Ourika Garden, absorbs excess sebum. While this offers medium coverage, it’s also great for quick touchups.

Suqqu Summer Collection
Suqqu goes for a full-blown glow this coming Autumn. The new colour collection is all about dewy, metallic finish for both eyes, cheeks and complexion. Brown, taupe, peach and purple dominate the colour scheme, with each palette featuring an unusual colour combination for a more experimental look. The must-have is Power Blush Compact, which features 4 cheek colours and 2 highlighters in feather-light powder formula and soft, natural colours that compliment every skin tone.

Drunk Elephant E-Rase Milki Micellar Water
Like a magnet for grime and makeup sitting on your pores, micellar water is the go-to makeup remover for many as it’s not as greasy as oil cleansers and neither is it as ecologically wasteful as makeup wipes. Traditionally clear with a texture as light as water, Drunk Elephant‘s version turns expectations on its head with a milky formula. Ultra-mild micelles (tiny balls of oil molecules) effectively removes dirt from your skin while the rest of the blend nourishes skin. Think rich antioxidants, soothing vitamin E, and non-fragrant plant oils (marula, baobab, mongongo, wild melon seed, ximenia seed, passionfruit, and sweet almond) to hydrate skin. We’ve used this for weeks now, and can affirm this does a great job of gently and effectively removing makeup. While this is a no-rinse formula, remember to follow up with a double cleanse after to thoroughly clean skin.

Tom Ford Soleil Summer 2020
Whether or not you’re capable of hitting the beach this season, it’s never a bad idea to go with the glow whenever you’re going outdoor. Tom Ford’s new Soleil Summer 2020 collection offers 3 new products that give all ladies a natural, irresistible radiance. The Skin Illuminator for Face and Body brings brilliance to wherever it touches and gives the look of skin bathed in summer evening light. The Ultra Shine Lip Color combines the gleam of a lip gloss, and the rich emollient of a lip balm to give you a lustrous pout while the Soleil Lip Blush is a balmy lipstick that smooths on sheer, infusing lips with moisture, then transforms into a sultry pink stain for beautifully a lightweight colour.

Foreo Luna 3
Those who have tried it knows nothing transforms your skin like Foreo! Now in its third generation, the cleansing gadget Luna 3 is designed to cleanse better, last longer, feel softer and provide more intensity options for you through the Foreo App, to help you combat any skin irritation especially the ‘mAskne’ or mask acne, skin condition believed to be caused by the air circulation in the mask, which increases the temperature and moisture level that contribute to skin irritation and bacteria buildup.

Frédéric Malle Carnal Flower
When we met Margaret Magnuson, Frédéric Malle’s Global Brand Expert, last year, she told us about the Carnal Flower scent. Describe as a ‘true job of a great perfumer’, it’s regarded as a power perfume in Hollywood and the entertainment industry, as well as in tech and Silicon Valley. It’s concocted by Dominique Ropion, whose creations are lauded as architectural feats. This is no different. Carnal Flower has a distinct flower shop freshness, with the dark sensuality of tuberose hidden by citrus leaves and the lighter floral notes of ylang ylang and jasmine enhanced by white musk.
Available at Paragon Department Store.
Hourglass Unlocked Instant Extension Mascara
The first permanent product in Hourglass’s Unlocked line — a special collection for which 5% of the profits will be donated to the Nonhuman Rights Project, the organisation working to secure civil rights for animals — the Unlocked Instant Extension Mascara is all about the look of lash extension in a tube. The ultimate formula brings about more definition, more lift and more length — an impossibly real result that culmunates in a fanned-out finish and smudge-proof wear.
Available at all Hourglass counters and Sephora Online.
