“Don’t dress to kill, dress to survive” — Karl Lagerfeld.
While it’s been months since the passing of the world’s most legendary fashion icon yet, the world continues to mourn and miss Karl Lagerfeld. We remember him through his designs, his quotes, and of course, his stores. On Wednesday May 22, those of us who are #TeamKarl in Thailand finally got a Karl Lagerfeld of our own to frequent — and the first in the region to boot. Even with a jam-packed day of events — including, ahem ahem, Gucci Fall-Winter 2019 — we still made sure to fit this one onto our agenda, and it was worth the effort. From what to expect inside Southeast Asia’s first ever Karl Lagerfeld store, to who was at the event, here’s our Prestige Recap of the affair.
Karl Lagerfeld Thailand: What’s the Craze?
Rising rather proudly from the 1st floor of Central World, and adorned with that unmissably iconic silhouette of the man behind the brand, the newly opened Thai flagship gives you 120 square metres of pure Karl Lagerfeld. Rather than simply showcasing his designs, the store is very much a celebration of Lagerfeld himself — in the words of Porndet Chandawanich, founder of Pat Luxury Group, “for the interior design, we were inspired by Karl Lagerfeld’s home and office.”
It’s true. Lining the floors are rugs taken from his actual house, Lagerfeld’s sketches are framed in chrome and brass, and we love how the recurring marble works with the spacious and well-lit space to create a sense of welcoming luxury. While the size, and the fact that this marks Southeast Asia’s first such flagship are both notable, what truly won our hearts and admiration was the attention to detail — the red edge he used to frame his sketches in were transferred to frame the carpets, and the wooden flooring was inspired by the antiques and retro French designs seen in his home.
The Collections: What’s in Store?
Entering Karl Lagerfeld, we were immediately blown away by how it was so apparently him. A unique yet tasteful blend of bold rocker meets Parisian chic, the collections pop in reds, whites and blacks — and his ever-present figure pops even more.
While the extensive collection of ready-to-wear, accessories, jewellery and even fragrances were no doubt exciting, we were most thrilled to discover that there was something especially designed for Bangkok. As a tributal nod to the flagship stores’ latest home, an exclusive special edition Bangkok bag was created under the ‘City’ collection — a big yes for Thai pride!
The Event: Who was There?
We weren’t the only ones who made the effort to be at the opening party. Also at the event were celebrities and A-list Karl Lagerfeld fans — we bumped into names like MR Mannarumas Yukol Svasti-Xuto, Siriyos Devahasdin Na Ayudhya, Kornkanok Yongsakul and Chanatip Phothongka. As we enjoyed the photobooth — yes, the event photobooth shenanigans continue! — and macarons decorated with Karl Lagerfeld’s silhouette, guests continued to enter the store, marvelling at the items on display and mingling well into the evening.
