Saint Laurent continues to showcase their new collection in exciting ways, this time, through a short film directed by Gaspar Noé.
After being showcased on the runway in a North Africa desert last December, Saint Laurent spring/summer 2021 collection is now reinterpreted into a short film. Called Summer of ’21, the short film is directed by Argentine filmmaker Gaspar Noé and guided by the brand’s creative direction Anthony Vaccarello.
Oscar nominee actress Charlotte Rampling stars in the short film alongside models Anok Yai, Mica Arganaraz, Sora Choi and others. Combining high fashion and gilded scenery, the nearly eight-minute film begins with a woman running and screaming in terror through a forest. As an instrumental cover of Donna Summer’s disco hit ‘I Feel Love’ by Sebastian plays, as she enters a house, where models are seen walking around and lounging in several different rooms that are painted red and bathed in moody lighting.
The press release reads, as quoted in Variety, the atmosphere is “reminiscent of the first Saint Laurent Rive Gauche boutiques of the sixties.” It also adds, “A world bathed by a red, hazy, velvety light, reminiscent of the glory years of giallo or the interiors of Saint Laurent shops from another era. A familiar and timeless feeling. Dreaminess and tension, decadence and danger, like a false torpor. The unsettling strangeness of those girls gravitating around Charlotte Rampling, the mysterious and haunted priestess.”
The project reteams Noé and Saint Laurent after a collaboration on ‘Lux Æterna’, a 50-minute film that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019.
