For Prapanin “Nan” Wongchotpinthong, jewellery-making has been a passion for as long as she can remember. As a child, she spent hours at her family’s jewellery moulding factory observing her father working with metals. Although she admired his craft, she felt that the metal moulding process alone was not enough. For her, precious gemstones and diamonds, were the missing elements.
After completing her Bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts from Bangkok University, Nan furthered her education in Gemology and Jewellery Design at the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand in hopes of pursuing her dream and launch her own brand.
In 2014, Papanin Gems and Jewelry saw the light of day. Starting small, Nan sold her first piece of jewellery on Instagram. From an online store, she has now expanded to a boutique at Bon Marché Market Park, close to Chatuchak. From developing the initial designs to quality control of the finished pieces, the young entrepreneur works closely with her team to create stylish jewellery for her clients. Despite venturing on her own, Nan’s father still plays an important part in her business. Almost all of Papanin’s jewellery moulds come from her family’s factory. While her father continues to work on the moulds, Nan focuses on the design and handpicks all of the diamonds used for the jewellery.
Although Nan has a design team, she often finds inspiration for her next piece from her surroundings. Sometimes, when creativity becomes stagnant, she and her team freely arrange diamonds together aiming to create jewellery inspired by nature – the result of which once turned out to be a stunning jewellery set comprised of a pair of earrings and a necklace.
Aside from design, Nan also pays close attention to customer service. She firmly believes in giving her clients the service that she would want for herself. With high-quality products offered at a reasonable price and matched with excellent services, Papanin has gained a steady following over the years, most of which through word-of-mouth and good reviews on social media platforms.
Nan believes that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, as the saying goes, and everyone should be able to own diamond jewellery – regardless of who they are. Aside from her ready-to-wear pieces, she receives a lot of requests for personalised jewellery pieces, which she gladly takes on, as she enjoys working one-on-one with clients. Whether it is a statement necklace to go with evening attire, a bracelet that fits with an everyday outfit or matching wedding rings, Papanin provides a great selection of timeless jewellery for every occasion.
Despite having designed numerous pieces, Nan’s favourite creation thus far is an illusion emerald-cut diamond with halo setting ring. The stunning piece of art sees smaller diamonds clustered together to create a bigger emerald cut diamond. The elongated shape of the central diamond gives the ring a sophisticated look, while the halo setting enhances the sparkle and brilliance of the stones. To Nan, this design is edgy and represents strong character traits such as discipline and decisiveness, suitable for modern women. The emerald-cut diamond ring also comes with a matching earring set, for those who seek to stand out among the crowd. The illusion emerald-cut diamond has been a hit with her younger clientele, who now prefer illusion setting to a traditional big round diamond.
From an online store to a full-fledged boutique, Papanin has come a long way since its humble beginnings. Today, Nan aims to continue strengthening her brand with the addition of new designs, high-quality diamonds and gemstones, as well as fine Thai craftsmanship. She is also committed to expanding her business as an international jewellery brand with the opening of new branches in the future, while still maintaining the high standards of customer service her brand is so recognised for.
