Michael Jackson as the main inspiration for a luxury fashion collection is a long time coming, considering how the King of Pop has spent his life reinventing not just his own image, but the men’s wardrobe as a whole. There’s no way the theatrical military uniforms and oversized three-piece suits we are seeing on the world’s most revered street style icons now would see the light of day if not for Jackson’s contribution. So, it comes as little surprise when Virgil Abloh would go back to the legendary pop star’s costume to create his Autumn/Winter 2019-2020 collection for Louis Vuitton Men.
But being the torch bearer of contemporary fashion who turns streetwear and hoodies into luxury staples as he is, Abloh hardly brings Jackson’s memorable pieces to the runway literally. Most of the silhouettes and sensibility remain Abloh’s signature, but the designer indeed embraces his muse’s penchant for military uniform, sequins and glitter shoes, sparkling gloves and wide-brimmed fedora hats.
While the collection is coated in subdued beige, khaki and grey, it’s brightened up with coats, bottoms and jackets made of flags of various nations — a tribute to none other than the global hit “We Are the World,” which Jackson and Lionel Richie wrote and recorded with a superstar cast including Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Cyndi Lauper, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles and many more to benefit African famine relief in 1985.
