50 years ago, the crew of NASA’s Apollo 11 landed on the moon. Along with them, Omega’s Speedmaster became the first watch to be worn on Earth’s natural satellite. It’s not every day that you can wear the first watch worn on the moon and relive its journey, but today, although not for long, as there are only 6,969 pieces available, you can. In tribute to the iconic hours of Apollo 11, Omega has released it’s Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Limited Edition. Let’s step off and take a closer look.
The Design: It’s All In The Details
Omega does an exemplary job of capturing all the details of Apollo 11 in its limited edition watch. Just as the mission was “one giant leap for mankind,” the Swiss watchmaker made sure to introduce a new material, 18K MoonshineTM gold, to express both the brand and the mission’s pioneering spirit.
Omega has laser-engraved the image of Buzz Aldrin, whose Speedmaster timepiece became the first worn on the moon, on a Moonshine Gold plate.
The 18K Moonshine Gold is also used to form “11” by the 11 o’clock marker in tribute to Apollo 11.
An astronaut’s footprint, which has been laser-engraved onto a black-coated plate with moon-surface texture, is also featured on the case-back. The design is accompanied by a quote, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind,” from Neil Armstrong — the first man to step onto the moon.
The Features: Engineering At It’s Best
As with its predecessors, the Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Limited Edition features seconds, date, and month indicator. The difference is the brand new “perfect mechanical movement”— the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861. Equipped with anti-magnetic innovation and stop-second function, this movement is accurate down to the second.
The Experience: More Than Just A Watch
Who isn’t fascinated by Apollo 11? Absolutely no one. You can now relive the mission as this exclusive timepiece comes with a NASA-styled box and few other notable features such as the Velcro strap with blackened cork (inspired by the “boost protective cover”— a fiberglass structure that kept the crew safe from intense heat during rocket-launch), two mission patches (50th Anniversary / Apollo 11), and a Lunar Model display stand.
