Swiss luxury watchmaker Breitling recently made the heads of many watch lovers turn when it presented a re-edition of the Ref.765 AVI, a 1953 pilot’s watch classic known back then as the “Co-Pilot” for its exceptionally striking look and aviation powers. The historic Co-Pilot had a rotating bezel and oversized Arabic numerals and paved the way for Breitling’s repertoire of chronographs to come. Now the Swiss watchmaker gives us a 2020 re-edition, the new AVI Ref. 765 1953, and there is no question that Breitling aficionados will be delighted.
How does the new AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-Edition keep with tradition?
Although there are some obvious changes to the impressive remake of Breitling’s latest new AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-Edition, there are still a number of things that signify it has followed the traditions of the 1953 Co-Pilot. The latest remake still features the same Arabic numerals as its forefather, as well as hand-applied Super-LumiNova, the colour of which has been wisely selected to elicit the luminescent material of the original.
Also identical to the 1953 Co-Pilot is the remake’s 41.1 millimetre stainless-steel case, with a bezel that is locked by three screws that are placed specifically in the same points as those on the watch from 1953. In matching the earliest examples and iterations of the watch after 1953, the AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-Edition also features thin syringe hands and a domed hesalite crystal, crafted and shaped in the exact same way as the original.
What makes the new AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-Edition different from the original?
There are only two iterations that differentiate this new timepiece from the original. Firstly, the water resistance of the AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-Edition has been increased to 30 metres. Secondly, those with a very keen eye will also notice that the word “GENEVE” no longer appears on the dial.
What else is there to know about the AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-Edition?
Strikingly, it’s presented on a black vintage-inspired leather strap with a pin buckle. The re-edition will come in two precious-metal versions. The first is crafted in 18k red gold with a black dial and a brown vintage-inspired leather strap – this version will have a limited-edition run of 253 pieces and have the words “ONE OF 253” notably etched on its case back.
The second version comes in platinum and features a blue dial and a gold vintage-inspired leather strap. This beautiful version will be available in a limited edition and will be one of only 153 pieces, a fact proven by the words “ONE OF 153” exquisitely etched on the back of the platinum case.
If purchased, the watch comes with a five-year warranty.
