Over the past year, a few luxury automakers have made bold moves into the yacht industry. Both Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz proudly displayed concept boats at the Monaco International Boat Show last year, and now Lexus is turning some heads with its own lavish concept vessel. This isn’t some barely practical clay concept, either, it’s a fully functional, beautifully designed luxury yacht. Just watch the video below.
Dubbed the Lexus Sport Yacht Concept, the 12.7-metre vessel might be one of the best balances between beauty and brawn we have seen in a while – luxury yacht design has been a little stagnant recently. It features a stunning carbon fibre gold and grey body with a gorgeous white leather and wood interior cabin – room for eight passengers. In the rear, it’s powered by twin high-performance Lexus V8 880-hp engines, giving the boat a top speed of 43 knots.
The yacht is a one-off creation, however, with no future production intent. According to Yoshihiro Sawa, executive vice president of Lexus International, the vessel was merely a creative exercise for the Lexus Design Center.
“This concept for a Lexus Sport Yacht allowed us to explore how Lexus design language could be applied to a maritime lifestyle,” he said. “For the Lexus Design Center, this project has been very exciting. The effort is valuable to us as it stirs our creative energies and pushes our imagination to design and lifestyle possibilities outside of the automotive realm we know well.”
That’s too bad, because the reaction from both the yachting and automotive communities suggests this would have been an instant hit – perhaps even more popular than the offerings from Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz.
