The thing about wine appreciation is, the more you drink it the more you appreciate it. Here now are a couple of intriguing swirl and sip events that should get your palate in shape for the James Suckling ‘Great Wines of Italy Asia 2019’ tour, which arrives in Bangkok on November 27th.
Place: Belga Rooftop Bar & Brasserie
Date: October 22, from 7pm to 9pm
As part of the ongoing Sofitel Wine Days promotion at the Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit hotel, there will be a special ‘Mystery Wine Tasting’ held in the Private Room at the 32nd floor Belga Rooftop Bar & Brasserie. Test your wine knowledge by trying to identify the striking characteristics, tasting notes, grape varietals, and country of origin of each mystery label selected by the hotel’s resident sommelier from their extensive wine cellar. In addition, Belga’s Executive Chef Nicolas Basset will be preparing authentic and very tasty Belgian ‘bites’ to accompany each wine. Tickets for this event are priced at THB 990++ per person.
Also, keep in mind that the Wine Boutique, on the ground floor of the Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit hotel, is presenting an ‘Every Day Happy Hour!’ from now until October 31st. Indulge with one or two hours of free-flow selected wines, any time between 2pm and 11pm. Wine choices include a delightful South African Oude Kaap Cabernet-Merlot and a fruity Borgo San Leo Prosecco Brut from Italy.

As part of their long running series of wine tasting evenings, the Studio Bar, located on the ground floor of the Pathumwan Princess Hotel, presents ‘A Spanish Wine Tasting’, showcasing five classic Spanish wines from the CVNE family winery in La Rioja, Spain (founded in 1879). The winery’s Blancher, Rueda, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserve wines will be accompanied by a selection of Northern Thai tapas dishes. The evening will be hosted by CVNE’s brand ambassador, with entertainment provided by resident singer Ella. It’s still a ways off, but you’d be advised to book your tickets now for the Bangkok stop on internationally acclaimed wine critic James Suckling’s ‘Great Wines of Italy Asia 2019’ tour. Now in its 8th edition, this annual event, which will be held once again at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel, is Bangkok’s largest premium Italian wine showcase and this year will be presenting more than 100 top-tier Italian producers handpicked by James Suckling himself. From Brunellos and Barolos, to Super Tuscans and Barbarescos, to Amarones and Chianti Classicos, the 200+ wines to be poured are all superb quality, each scoring at least 90+ points. In addition, a delicious spread of Italian meats and cheese will be prepared by the Grand Hyatt Erawan team, while entertainment will be provided once again by award-winning music producer and DJ artist Surahn Sidhu. Tickets are THB 1,699 each, or just THB 1,200 if reserved by November 1st, 2019.
