Teng Ngiek Lian
He grew up poor in Trengganu, Malaysia, where he had to work to pay for his higher education, so when Teng, a fund manager made his millions, he knew he had to give back to society. In 2010, Teng, now a Singaporean, set up The Silent Foundation with a $50-million endowment. It seeks to support those without a voice and funds charities that work with foreign workers as well as those promoting environmental conservation and animal protection. Teng is also the founder of boutique invest firm Target Asset Management, which has about US$1 billion in assets under management.
