5 highlights of Singapore Design Week 2019 you shouldn’t miss

SingaPlural returns with the theme ”Unnatural Phenomena”, which centres on the origin and evolution of extraordinary hybrids. This year’s edition wants visitors to expect the unexpected, the weird, and the wonderfully bizarre. Make a stop at Enjoy the Silence, a sculptural acoustic installation that creates an unnaturally quiet area within a crowded space to explore the connection between form and sound. Also visit Autumn, which combines virtual reality with sound and scent to transport visitors to an autumn morning.

4 to 17 March 

Wallpaper Handmade presents the biggest challenge for aspiring designers in the fields of architecture, fashion, product, graphic, furniture and industrial design. The challenge? Young Singapore-based designers were tasked to turn everyday, mundane objects into things of beauty. Winner and La Salle graduate Brandon Yeo clinched the title with “Clink”, a quirky take on a piggybank. Other submissions included Eui Yeob Na’s “Craftionery”, which features stationery and desk items that users can build by themselves.

7 March to 10 June 

Kobo House opens this year’s Singapore Design Week. The gallery is home to over 30 different makers in Japan, ranging from traditional artisans in Kyushu to production facilities in the Kanto region to traditional artisans in Kyushu, the perfect place to gain insight to Japanese craftsmanship. Relations — its central exhibition directed by Singaporeans Timo Wong and Priscilla Lui from Studio Juju — explores the relationship between the makers and the designer. Also on exhibit are collaborative works between Singaporean designers and Japanese craftsmen.

9 to 17 March

This Singapore Design Week, Bukit Pasoh is seeing a clan takeover with a street festival of open houses, performances and dialogues with artists. Get rare access to the clan houses of Chin Kang Huay Kuan and Koh Clan where there’ll be interactive design installations by local artists and designers. Bag a front row seat to talks by creative industry insiders and masterclasses that update traditional recipes, including a cocktail class with Casa Poncho, and a Peranakan cooking class with Chef Malcolm Lee of Candlenut.

8 — 10 March

This is the place to be to spot this year’s furniture trends. Held in conjunction with the 36th ASEAN Furniture Show and NOOK Asia 2019, this year’s edition takes inspiration from rich heritage, culture and diversity of crowded cities. Shop collections by renowned international brands such as India’s Ayub Rugs, Portugal’s Satchi and Romania’s Materia Studio, visit design showcases and discover Asia’s next generation of design talents.
