Charlotte Lynggaard, designer and creative director at Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen, shares how she plans to spend the holidays and dishes out tips on donning jewels for maximum style and impact.
What do you do on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?
Usually I spend most of the day at home preparing for the evening, as we normally celebrate Christmas Eve at home. We have a beautiful term in Denmark called hygge. The holidays will always mean hygge to me, which loosely translates into cosiness, but it is more a state of mind.
To me, Christmas hygge involves everything from a forest stroll, to the smell of cinnamon, snuggling up on the sofa, elegantly wrapping presents, creating Christmas ornaments, or having a lovely dinner in the company of friends and family.
If you are attending a party should you always bring something?
I always bring a little something, whether it’s a dish, a dessert or a Christmas decoration. I love the tradition of bringing something for the tree, so that you add a little story and your decoration becomes a part of its history.
A paper cone ornament for treats and sweet holiday secrets is one of Scandinavia’s most traditional Christmas decorations. My father, Ole, has been making ornaments for over 40 years and I always enjoy creating new designs with him.
How do you recommend styling jewellery for Christmas and New Year’s Eve?
The festive season is a great time for relaxation, so I recommend something that feels natural and easy to wear but is still something special. This year I will be spending Christmas in Australia with my family, enjoying the beautiful warm weather there, so I will be channeling a summer look with my jewellery. I will stack three of our Lotus Rings, one pearl, one carnelian (red) and one with pavé diamonds, which are nice tones for the festive season. In the evening I will wear our big Lotus ring in rutilated quartz.
New Year’s Eve calls for a statement, something with sparkle. It’s a great time to create a bold look and mismatched earrings are a nice way to add edge to your outfit. I will wear our Shooting Stars earrings in yellow gold with scintillating diamonds and will add our Shooting Stars cuff pendant or the pearl drop pendant on one ear.
