The Chairman and CEO of the Armani Group has been selected for the accolade for his “outstanding contribution to the global fashion industry, his creativity and vision of timeless style and care for detail,” the BFC said in a statement.
“With more than four decades in the business, Mr Armani’s contribution to the fashion industry is indeed outstanding,” said Caroline Rush CBE, Chief Executive of the BFC. “Renowned for his timeless vision of style and the brands’ ability to stay relevant, he has led the way where other brands have followed.”
Armani, who was born in the city of Piacenza and studied medicine before moving into fashion, founded his own clothing label in 1975. His timeless and sophisticated aesthetic saw him rise rapidly through the ranks of the fashion industry, and today the Armani Group oversees a fashion, lifestyle and hotel empire encompassing the labels Giorgio Armani, Emporio Armani, and A/X Armani Exchange.
The creative has also had a significant influence on the world of cinema, designing costumes for more than 200 films over the course of his career, in addition to providing kits for the English football team in 2006 and the Italian Olympic and Paralympic teams since 2012. In 1982 he expanded into fragrance before making a move on homewares, launching his debut interiors collection in the year 2000. In 2005, he took his fashion business up a notch with the launch of a haute couture collection in Paris.

Armani’s new accolade puts him in good company: last year’s ‘Outstanding Achievement’ award went to Miuccia Prada, while Ralph Lauren and Karl Lagerfeld have also claimed the title in recent years.
The annual Fashion Awards ceremony recognizes creativity and innovation in fashion, celebrating the designers and industry figures that have broken new ground over the past 12 months while raising funds for the BFC’s educational initiatives. This year’s ceremony will take place on December 2 at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
