First introduced in 1982, the Nike Airforce Ones are so iconic that they inspired rapper Nelly’s 2002 breakout hit. Today, the shoes remain a perennial favourite, thanks to the timeless design. Once labelled as basketball shoes, these trainers were named after the aircraft that carries the US president. They were also the first shoes to house Nike Air technology, which featured a pocket of air in the heel for soft, springy cushioning. Today, it is available in a bevy of colour ways but the white (fondly called “white on white”) ones remain the undisputed favourite. A padding at its collar gives it a snug, comfortable fit, while its perforation was made for ventilation.

Veja’s vision is to reinvent the sneaker, with a core ethos of “one foot in design, and the other in social responsibility”. Sustainability is present at every stage, from design to manufacturing, including the materials used. For instance, the cotton used for the canvas, lace, and uppers are organic, and purchased directly from fair trade producer associations in Brazil and Peru. Wild rubber is brought from seringueiro communities, rubber tappers in the Amazon who harvest and transform it from liquid rubber into sheets. Materials aside, all of its processes are transparent and fair trade. Its classic model, the V-10, sports the logo on the side, and is crafted from white vegetable-tanned leather in a lace-up, low-top shape, with a 1.5-inch sole.

Using smooth white leather and built with a sturdy sole, its updated white colourway features the playful ‘Mystic’ cat print that takes inspiration from vintage postcards, and honours Alessandro Michele’s love of animals.
