British illustrator Angelica Hicks has been painting her way through the fashion world for some time now, having done commissioned work with Tory Burch, Porter Magazine and other brands that are taken in by her cheeky cartoon illustrations with hints of satirical humour. The latest to have taken note of Hicks’ artistic prowess is Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele, who stumbled upon her works on Instagram.
The result is a limited edition T-shirt collection, featuring several of Hicks’ illustrations upon 11 T-shirt designs with pops of vibrant colours that correspond with Gucci’s Pre-Fall 2017 collection. Only 100 numbered units of each style are produced, coming up to a mere total of 1,100 pieces worldwide. On top of that, each T-shirt comes in a matching vintage-style metal box, consisting of a cardboard with removable die cut images of all the 11 illustrations featured in the collection.
Gucci announced the upcoming collaboration last week by unveiling on their Instagram a 1,900-square-footer of Hicks’ “Freaks and Geeks” illustration (one of the designs available in the collection) at Largo La Foppa, one of the livelier pedestrian district of Corso Garibaldi in Milan, Italy.
Subsequently, another of Hicks’ illustration for the capsule collection is spotted across the world in New York. Over at the SoHo district, at Lafayette Street where Prince Street and Spring Street cross paths, the “Criminal Couture!” design can be found in a 2,500 square feet mural form, taking up the space where former Gucci collaboration illustrator Jayde Fish once had her work, “The Hermit” on display.
The limited edition Gucci x Angelica Hicks T-shirt collection will be available online at Gucci.com from 25 May onwards, exclusively in the US and Europe.
