If it wasn’t for Bill Cunningham and his sensational Greta Garbo candid shot published in The New York Times in the 1978, street style would still be a “stepchild” to couture and ready-to-wear collections in the fashion industry. But it wasn’t until a decade ago that street style photography becomes an inspiration board for fashion editors, style enthusiasts and practically everyone in the digital era.
Streets of Paris, Milan, London and New York during fashion weeks become just as exciting as the runway shows. It’s all thanks to the “new breed” of street style photographers, with Scott Schuman (of The Sartorialist), Yvan Rodic (of Face Hunter) and Tommy Ton (of Jak & Jil) on the front line.
The power of street style makes it a natural move for Michael Kors to debut The Walk, dubbed as “a 360-degree street style handbag campaign”, with Tommy Ton. Featured in the campaign are Solange Knowles, sister of Beyonce and singer/songwriter in her own right, models Soo Joo Park and Nina Agdal and Princess Olympia of Greece.
Ton photographed each personality in the streets of New York, clutching the new Brooklyn and Isadore bags and clad in fall 2016 ready-to-wear collection. “It was really a fun experience observing how each girl would make the clothes and accessories their own and while still being true to their everyday style,” says Ton.
Solange was snapped in The Village, known as the bohemian capital of the city. “Miss Lily’s hands down. The energy and music and vibes there are always right on,” she says about her favourite haunt in the area. Nina’s photo spot was Bleecker Street, where The Kors Edit pop-op boutique will open in October. Soo Joo Park is seen roaming the streets of Meatpacking, a historic district in the city, while Princess Olympia is photographer in SoHo. “I love the vintage shop What Goes Around Comes Around, and my favourite place to eat is La Esquina. The best Mexican food,” she says of the hip area.
The Walk is set to be an ongoing series, with new style personalities joining it each season to spotlight key handbags and ready-to-wear. Fans can also take part in the campaign by posting their Michael Kors street style photos on Instagram and Twitter, with #SidewalkSpotted. Selected entries will be featured on michaelkors.com/TheWalk.
