A private tropical island may elicit images of sugary sands and utterly isolated bliss, or perhaps at the mere thought of it you begin to sketch the villa of your dreams.
Whatever your position, you might be surprised to learn that many Thai islands are up for sale – some ideal for development, others more idyllic personal destinations.
In recent years alone, islands such as Koh Madsum, Koh Naka Yai and little Koh Munnork have all been bought and developed into private escapes. And while not a private island, Soneva Kiri’s luxury villas on Koh Kood pretty much qualify, as well.
While there are certainly hoops prospective foreign buyers have to jump through, for serious buyers, owning a slice of sunny Thai perfection is remarkably more realistic than you may imagine (and for prospective Thai buyers, it’s a relative breeze).
Before you open up your wallets, though, let’s first stoke your imagination.
This pretty little island lays just a few hundred metres off the shores of Koh Samui, meaning it’s well-suited for a private residence, with minimal effort required to access the airport as well as the goods and activities on its big sister, Samui.
But Koh Som can also be turned into a resort, with the sellers even offering to provide serious buyers with previously drawn up conceptual plans for a five-star property.
Koh Tae Nai
Surrounded by coral reefs and set just 400 metres off the coast of Koh Phangan, the easily accessible Koh Tae Nai oozes potential.
For one, despite delays and budget issues, an airport is currently being constructed on Koh Phangan. And the island, at a little under 100 rai, is large enough to support any kind of property while small enough to retain its exclusivity – meaning, it could just as easily become home to a private residence as a spectacular resort.
Koh Rang Yai
The largest island up for grabs also comes with the largest price tag, at US$160 million. What this nets you is soft white sands and pearl-rich waters that are a very bright blue, not to mention nearly 300 rai of green inland offering panoramic views of the island-studded Andaman Sea.
Situated between Phuket, Krabi and many islands popular with tourists, such as Koh Phi Phi, and already developed, Koh Rang Yai clearly merits the lofty esteem its seller seems to give it.
