**When Alfresco 64 opened its doors March 9, it represented a game-changing moment in Bangkok’s high-end whisky culture.
The venue is the first and only whisky establishment in Bangkok to hold an exclusive partnership with renowned heritage brand Chivas Regal. The deal will see Alfresco 64 carry all Chivas whisky ranges and an exclusive blend created specifically for lebua.
Only 24 bottles of the special lebua Blend will be produced in the first year, available exclusively at Alfresco 64. The partnership represents the first time in Chivas’ long celebrated history that it has produced a whisky specifically for a single commercial entity – with each bottle numbered to preserve its history and exclusivity.
The lebua Blend will also be the final scotch created by Chivas’ long-time master blender Colin Scott, who has been with the brand for 27 years and made the journey from Scotland to see the venue this week.
Lebua’s CEO Deepak Ohri travelled to the Strathisla Distillery, the home of Chivas Regal in Scotland, to meet with Scott and get a taste of the special blend that was specially created for Alfresco 64.
“For Chivas Regal and lebua, this is a most exciting moment,” says Scott, describing the process of creating the lebua Blend alongside lebua’s CEO Deepak Ohri. “It is a unique bottling of some of our oldest and rarest whiskies. They’ve all been distilled in 1985 or earlier, and individually hand-selected for this special blend. [It was] finished in a top-quality, first-fill sherry cask… and has notes of luxurious dark chocolate sweetness, liquorice and sweet toffee apples.”
“It’s amazing, out of this world,” Deepak proclaims. “Who would have thought that Colin Scott would do something like that for a whisky bar… As unconventional as this blend is, so too is everything else about Alfresco 64. The design is very different – a place to really enjoy such a special blend. And we will only have 68 bottles of this whisky available.”
In addition to the lebua Blend, Alfresco 64 holds Bangkok exclusives over at least 10 other whiskies, including the exceedingly rare Yamazaki 25, which is only available at auction, and Royal Salute 38, one of the most difficult blends to find on Earth.
The establishment also doubles as a cigar bar and, among many other fine Cuban brands, offers a unique handmade cigar from Juan Lopez, one of Cuba’s most trusted heritage brands.
Exclusivity underpins the entire concept of Alfresco 64, whether that be through limited whiskies and cigars or experiences you can’t find at any other venue in Bangkok.
The establishment aims to turn the traditional idea of a whisky bar on its head – ditching stuffy chesterfields and heavy wood in favour of a light, open-air experience more inviting to a wider range of discerning customers.
“We take inspiration from fashion – the things that are trending,” Deepak explains. “We are very good at interpreting fashion and expressing that through our designs. People are going for freedom, they want to be liberated. Anything that gives them that freedom – whether it is food, drinking or their exercise regime. And this is what we have done at Alfresco 64… it’s an expression of freedom, openness.
“I think people in Asia want to drink better whiskies and they want to enjoy that in a better place. People are also inquisitive about whisky, and we are taking the first step towards giving them a whole new experience.”
The venue’s outdoor space, designed to resemble the bow of a luxury yacht, offers breathtaking views of Bangkok’s northwestern skyline with large hardwood deck space and an upbeat, but sophisticated atmosphere.
Lebua has gone to painstaking lengths to ensure that the whisky-drinking experience at Alfresco 64 is right on par with other world-class nightlife hubs, such as New York and London – right down to the glassware.
The highlight being its special Peugeot tasting glasses from the brand’s Les Impitoyables collection, which feature distinctive wide bowls and metal base plates designed to chill high quality whiskies without diluting them with melted ice.
In addition to this, Alfresco 64 includes an extensive collection of wide bottom, double rock and nosing glasses from Normann Copenhagen and Schott Zwiesel to help tailor the tasting experience to each customer’s palate and preferences.
The opening of Alfresco 64 represents another highlight of lebua’s dining and nightlife experience at the top of the lebua at State Tower, providing customers with venues for pre-dinner champagne, dinner and wine, after-meal cocktails and whisky and cigars – all in one integrated space.
